Broadway's Cort Theatre to Be Renamed After James Earl Jones

극작가 어거스트 윌슨 이어 두번째 흑인 연극인 극장명

 

 

브로드웨이의 코트 시어터(Cort Theatre. 138 West 48th St.) 이름이 흑인 배우 제임스 얼 존스(James Earl Jones, 91)의 이름을 따서 바뀐다. #BlackLivesMatter 이후 백인 일색의 브로드웨이 극장가에도 영향을 끼친 것이다. 

 

코트 시어터를 소유한 슈버트 오가니제이션(Shubert Organization)은 "존스가 평생 브로드웨이와 전체 예술 커뮤니티에 지대한 공헌을 한 것을 인정하기 위해 개명을 했다"고 밝혔다. 이번 극장 개명은 극장주, 프로듀서, 노조 지도자, 창작자, 캐스팅 디렉터 등으로 구성된 브로드웨이 연합이 극장산업의 형평성, 다양성, 포용성 및 접근성을 약속한 지 1년이 채 되지 않아 이루어졌다. 브로드웨이 뉴딜(New Deal) 중 하나는 극장가에 흑인 예술인의 이름을 딴 극장이 있어야 한다는 것이었다. 제임스 얼 존스는 희곡작가 어거스트 윌슨(August Wilson)에 이어 극장 이름에 오른 두번째 흑인이다.

제임스 얼 존스는 EGOT(에미상, 그래미상, 오스카상, 토니상)을 모두 석권한 배우다. 1931년 미씨시피주 아카부틀라의 흑인, 아이리쉬, 미원주민 혼혈로 태어났다. 아버지 로버트 얼 존스는 제임스가 태어난 지 얼마 후 가정을 떠나 뉴욕과 할리우드에서 배우로 활동했다. 얼 존스 부자는 1950년대에서야 비로소 관계를 회복했다. 의대를 지망하기 위해 미시간대에 입학했다가 미시간대예술대학교로 전학했으며, 뉴욕에 온 후엔 아메리칸시어터윙에서 연기를 배우면서 생활비를 벌기 위해 수위로 일했다.

1957년 전 첫 브로드웨이 데뷔 후 오셀로, 햄릿, 리어왕 등 셰익스피어 전문 배우로 알려졌다. 코트 시어터에서만 2편을 비롯, 21편의 연극에 출연했다. 1968년 'Great White Hope'로 첫 토니상 남우주연상을 받았으며, 1970년 할리우드 영화로 제작되어 아카데미상과 골든 글로브상 후보에 올랐다.

 

1987년엔 어거스트 윌슨의 '울타리(Fences)'로 두번째 토니상을 거머쥐었고, 2017년엔 평생공로상을 수상했다. 2002년 케네디센터 공로상을 받았다. 존스는 '닥터 스트레인지 러브' '스타 워즈' 등 할리우드 영화에도 출연했으며, 라이온 킹'의 무파사(심바 아버지) 등 성우로도 활동해왔다.

어거스트 윌슨(August Wilson, 1945-2005)은 퓰리처상 2회(Fences, 1987/ The Piano Lesson, 1990) 수상, 토니상 최우수 연극상을 수상했다. '극장의 시인'으로 불리우는 윌슨은 2006년 아메리칸 시어터 명예의 전당'에 등재됐다. 

 

코트 시어터는 1912년 노스웨스턴시어터연합의 제너럴매니저였던 존 코트(John Cort)의 이름을 땄다. 2017년 줄리 테이머 연출, 한인 배우 진 하(Jin Han)씨가 주연한 연극 'M. 버터플라이(M. Butterfly)'가 공연됐다. 코로나 팬데믹 중 보수공사를 거쳤다. 

 

브로드웨이는 500석 이상의 극장 41개 극장이며, 유대계 극장주 슈버트, 네덜란더, 주잠신이 31개 극장을 소유하고 있다.

슈버트 오가니제이션(Shubert Organization)는 앰버서더, 벨라스코, 브로드허스트, 브로드웨이, 코트(*제임스얼존스), 존 골든, 임페리얼, 버나드 B. 제이콥스, 롱에이커, 라이시움, 머제스틱, 뮤직박스, 제랄드숀펠드, 슈버트, 윈터가든 시어터 등 17개를 소유하고 있으며, 네덜란더 오가니제이션(Nederlander Organization)은 브룩스앳킨스, 거쉰, 룬트-폰테인, 마퀴, 민스코프, 네덜란더, 팰리스, 리처드로저스, 닐사이먼 시어터 등 9개 극장, 주잠신 시어터(Jujamcyn Theaters)는 세인트제임스, 알허쉬펠드, 어거스트윌슨, 유진오닐, 월터커 시어터 등 5개를 운영한다. 이중 여성 이름은 4명(브룩스 앳킨스, 에델 배리무어, 헬렌 헤이즈, 비비안 보몽), 흑인이 2명(어거스트 윌슨, 제임스 얼 존스)이 올랐다.
