어빙 벌린(1888-1989)본명은 이스라엘 벌린(Israel Beilin), 러시아에서 태어나 다섯살 때 미국으로 이민, 뉴욕 로어이스트사이드에 정착했다. 13살 때 학교 중퇴 후 성가대원이었던 아버지를 따라 다니며 음악을 접했다. 차이나타운의 카페에서 노래하는 웨이터로 시작 정식 피아니스트로 공연하면서 본격적으로 작곡한다. 'White Christmas' 'There's No Business Like Show Business' 등 명곡을 작곡했으며, '지그펠드 폴리(Ziegfeld Follies)', '애니, 총을 들어요(Annie Get Your Gun)' 등 브로드웨이 뮤지컬 20여편, 할리우드 영화 15편을 작곡해 아카데미상 후보에 8회 후보로 올랐다. 1918년 제 1차 세계대전 진행 중 'God Bless America'를 작곡, 1938년 제 2차 세계대전 중 수정해 가수 케이트 스미스(Kate Smith)가 녹음해 널리 알려졌다. 1943년 로날드 레이건 주연 뮤지컬 영화 'This is the Army'에서 케이트 스미스가 부르기도 했다. 어빙 벌린은 훗날 브로드웨이 뮤직박스 시어터를 소유했다.
