한인 크리스티나 유나 리(Christina Yuna Lee, 35)씨가 13일 오전 4시 30분경 맨해튼 차이나타운 크리스티 스트릿의 6층 자신의 아파트에서 쫓아오던 흑인 홈리스 아싸마드 내시(Assamad Nash, 25)의 칼에 찔려 사망했다. 이웃 주민들은 이씨 아파트에서 나는 비명 소리에 경찰에 신고했으며, 경찰이 출동하자 내쉬는 뒷창문으로 탈출을 시도하다가 체포됐다. 이씨는 욕조에서 숨진 채 발견됐으며, 40차례 칼에 찔린 것으로 알려졌다.

크리스티나 유나 리씨는 럿거스대에서 미술사를 전공한 후 디지털음악 온라인 플랫폼인 스플라이스(Splice)에서 크리에이티브 프로듀서로 일해왔다. 법원 기록에 따르면, 내쉬는 폭행, 희롱, 메트로카드 판매 등 경범죄로 지난해에만 최소 4차례 체포된 바 있다. 이씨의 집주인 브라이언 친(Brian Chin)씨는 내쉬가 감옥에 있었더라면 사고를 피할 수 있었을 것이라고 말했다. 

경찰은 이 사건을 증오범죄로 분류하지는 않았지만, 지난해 아시안 대상 증오범죄가 전년 대비 361% 증가했다. 지난달엔 중국계 미셸 알리사 고(Michelle Alyssa Go, 40)가 맨해튼 R 트레인 플랫폼에서 밀쳐 사망했으며, 최근엔 한인 외교관(53)이 맨해튼 한인타운 인근에서 폭행을 당했다.
