카운터테너 김강민씨 로열오페라 최초 남성 케루비노 역

6월 29일-7월 21일 런던 코벤트가든 '피가로의 결혼' 데뷔

카운터 테너(고음으로 노래하는 남성 성악가) 김강민(강민 저스틴 김/Kangmin Justin Kim, 30)씨가 6월 29일 런던 코벤트가든의 로열오페라하우스에 데뷔하며 역사를 새로 썼다. 

영국 가디언지에 따르면, 김강민씨는 로열오페라하우스 70년 역사상 최초로 모차르트 작곡 '피가로의 결혼(The Marriage of Figaro)'에서 이전까지 소프라노 혹은 메조소프라노가 남장으로 맡았던(바지 역할, trouser role) 배역인 시종 케루비노(Cherubino)역으로 무대에 올랐다. 김강민씨는 코벤트가든에서 케루비노 역을 맡은 최초의 남성 성악가가 된 것이다.

김강민씨는 가디언지와의 인터뷰에서 "나에게는 커다란 영광이며, 남자로서 이 캐릭터를 살아있게 만들고, 아마도 사람들이 종종 보지 못하는 케루비노의 면...조작되는 것이 아니라 사실상 테스토스테론에 의해 더욱 남성적인 면을 보여줄 수 있게 되어 매우 황송하다."고 소감을 밝혔다. 

데이빗 맥비카(David McVicar)의 프로덕션 '피가로의 결혼'의 지휘봉을 잡은 존 엘리엇 가디너 경(Sir John Dliot Gardiner)은 김강민씨 캐스팅이 최근의 성정치학 논쟁에 흥미로운 논쟁거리로 떠오른 것에 대해 "흥미진진한 전환점이라고 생각한다. 저스틴 김은 탁월한 성악가이자 탁월한 배우이기도 하다. 나는 그를 남성 소프라노라고 부른다...그는 비상한 고음을 갖고 있으며, 매우 남성적이다"라고 밝혔다.

가디너 경은 또한 '성적인 유동성에 빠져있는 역에 남성을 캐스팅하는 것은 흥미롭다. 소년 역할을 하는 여성이 소년으로 돌아가기 전 소녀로 위장한다고 강조하면서 한층 깊이를 주는 이중적인 효과가 있다'고 말했다. 김강민씨는 설득력있게 소화하며, 가디너경은 이것이 모차르트 오페라에서 매혹적인 트위스트라고 밝혔다. 그러면서 모차르트가 케루비노에 소년을 캐스팅하지는 않았지만, 모차르트가 저스틴이 케루비노를 노래하는 아이디어에 대해 상당히 즐거워하며, 웃음짓고, 낄낄대고 무척 웃었을 것이라고 생각한다고 덧붙였다.

경상남도 김해에서 태어난 김강민씨는 11세에 시카고로 이민, 노스웨스턴대학교에서 뮤지컬과 성악을 전공했다. 2011년 유튜브에 이탈리아 소프라노 체칠리아 바르톨리(Cecillia Bartoli)가 비발디의 '두 줄기 바람이 몰아치고(Agitata da due venti)' 패러디 비디오 '김칠리아 바르톨리(Kimchilia Bartoli)'를 올려 50만회의 조회수를 기록하며 화제가 됐다. 이후 런던 로열아카데미 대학원에서 카운터 테너 수업을 받았다. 김씨는 '피가로의 결혼' 공연 후 10월엔 비엔나강변극장(Theater an der Wien)의 오페라 '티토왕의 자비(La Clemenza di Tito)'에 출연하며, 11월 9일엔 달라스오페라의 콘서트 'Hart Institute for Women Conductors'에서 노래할 예정이다.  http://kangminjustinkim.com

Korean-American Kangmin Justin Kim is one of the most sought-after countertenors of his generation, having earned accolades in roles of the Baroque repertoire, contemporary music and in Mozart’s trouser parts.

Engagements of the 2018/19 season include his Covent Garden debut as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner, his debut at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin as Nerone in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Idelberto in a new production of Lotario in Bern, Idamante in a new staging of Idomeneo at Staatstheater Wiesbaden and Megacle in Vivaldi’s L’Olimpiade with the Orchestra La Cetra conducted by Andrea Marcon in Basel and Herne.

Recently he was heard as Nerone in L’incoronazione di Poppea and Speranza in L’Orfeo at the Salzburg Festival, New York Lincoln Center, Philharmonie of Paris and Berlin, Harris Theatre in Chicago, Edinburgh Festival, Lucerne Festival and the Teatro La Fenice in Venice conducted by Gardiner, Cesare in Vivaldi’s Catone in Utica and Orlofsky in a new production of Die Fledermaus at the Oper Köln, Orfeo in Handel’s Parnasso in festa at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam conducted by Andrea Marcon, in Giulio Cesare for his Glyndebourne debut conducted by William Christie, in a staged production of Handel’s Jephtha at Maifestspiele Wiesbaden, in his debut at the Teatro San Carlo of Naples in Britten’s Canticles alongside Ian Bostridge,  in Carmina Burana with the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, as Barzane in Vivaldi’s Arsilda with the Collegium 1704 in Bratislava, Caen, Lille, Luxembourg and Versailles, Speranza in L’Orfeo at the Opéra de Dijon, and Romeo in Zingarelli’s Giulietta e Romeo at the Rokokotheater of Schwetzingen.

Other successes since his professional operatic debut in 2013 include Prince Orlofsky in Die Fledermaus for his Parisian debut at the Opéra Comique conducted by Marc Minkowski, Oreste in La Belle Hélène at the Théâtre du Châtelet of Paris, Sesto in La clemenza di Tito at the Opéra de Montpellier, Idamante in Idomeneo at the Stadttheater Gießen under the baton of Michael Hofstetter, Enea in the Handel/Vinci pasticcio Didone abbandonata at the Handel Festival Halle, his first Sesto in Giulio Cesare at the Handel Week Festival Oak Park, Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro and Kalitzke’s newly written opera, Pym for Theater Heidelberg. He could also be heard in Gala Concerts at the Styriarte Graz and at the Rokokotheater Schloss Schwetzingen.

Kangmin Justin Kim was born in South Korea and grew up in Chicago. He studied voice, opera, and musical theater at the Northwestern University in Evanston and the Royal Academy of Music, London.

He has collaborated with such prestigious conductor as Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Mark Minkowski, Andrea Marcon and Michael Hofstetter.
