The Faraway Nearby의 2023년 2024년 참여작가인 강경은과 이수임이 2024년 5월 4일 토요일 프린트 센터 뉴욕에서 열리는 Storywork: The Prints of Marie Watt 전시의 연계 프로그램에 초대되어 From This Blanket (2024) 퍼포먼스를 열 예정이다.

 

The Faraway Nearby 는 아시아 이민자 여성 작가들의 대화 과정을 전시의 형식으로 선보이는 큐레이토리얼 프로젝트로 역사와 공동체, 스토리텔링의 교차점을 탐구하는 메리 와트의 작업과 맞닿아 프린트센터 뉴욕 프로그램에 참여하게 됐다. 강경은과 이수임은 와트의 조각, Blanket Stories: Great Grandmother, Pandemic, Daybreak (2021)에서 영감을 받아 담요에 담긴 여러 서사를 둘의 대화에서 나온 호흡과 움직임, 침묵으로 풀어낸다. 삶의 순환, 가족, 돌봄, 회복력을 엮은 두 작가의 퍼포먼스는 담요에 새로운 생명을 불어넣으며 스토리텔링의 힘을 관객들과 공유하고자 한다.

 

강경은은 한국에서 태어나 뉴욕에서 활동하는 작가다. 그는 퍼포먼스, 비디오, 회화, 사진, 설치, 텍스트, 사운드 등 다양한 매체로 작업한다. 그의 작업은 A.I.R. 갤러리, Collar Works, NURTUREart, BRIC Project Room 및 ISCP 프로젝트 공간; 워싱턴 D.C.의 한국 문화 센터; 호주의 로렌스 윌슨 아트 갤러리; 그리고 한국의 국립 현대 미술관 등 미국 내외의 갤러리와 박물관에서 전시되었다. 강경은은 스코히건 회화 조각 학교, 엘리자베스 머레이 아티스트 레지던시, BRIC 미디어 아트, NARS 재단, Bemis 현대 미술 센터, LES 스튜디오 프로그램, ISCP, 뉴욕 예술 재단 등에서 레지던시와 펠로십을 받았다. 그는 홍익 대학교에서 회화 학사 및 석사 학위를 받았으며 뉴욕의 파슨스

디자인 학교에서 석사 학위를 받았다. 현재 강경은은 스맥 멜론 레지던시에 2023-24 년 스튜디오 아티스트로 소속되어 있다.

 

이수임 (b. Seoul, Korea)은 1981 년 뉴욕으로 이주해 현재까지 뉴욕에서 거주하고 있다. 그는 홍익대학교에서 회화 학사, 석사 학위 (각각 1976 년, 1978 년)를 받았으며 뉴욕 대학교에서 프린트메이킹으로 석사 학위를 받았다(1984 년). 최근 개인전으로는 SOO IM LEE: across time and place (Art Projects International, New York, 2017)가 있으며, Art Projects International, NY (2023); Color as Space (Art projects International, NY 2022), Paper and process 3 (Art projects International, NY, 2021), New works (Art projects International, NY, 2019), Summer selections (Art projects International, NY, 2018), Marking 2, (Art Projects International, NY, 2016), Summer Selections (Art Projects International, NY, 2014); Curate NYC (Rush Arts Gallery, NY, 2013), Intersecting Lines (Art Projects International, NY, 2012), 911 Arts: A Decade Later (Commons Gallery, New York University, 2011), Absence (Queens Museum of Art: Partnership Gallery, NY, 2010), Irrelevant, (Arario Gallery, NY, 2010), 등의 단체전에 참여하였다.

 

백지연은 뉴욕에서 활동하는 한국인 이민자 독립기획자이다. 현대 예술에서 여성과 유색 인종 예술가들이 다루는 인종, 젠더, 나이에 대한 주제에 관심을 두고 연구한다. 그는 갤러리 현대 뉴욕, 두산갤러리 뉴욕, 보스톤 미술관, 보스톤 아트 센터, 아라리오 뮤지엄 인 스페이스, 아트선재 센터 등 비영리 및 상업 갤러리 등에서 일했다. 주요 기획전으로는 <The Faraway Nearby>(A.I.R. 갤러리, 뉴욕, 2024), <Detaching (Parenthesis)>(두산갤러리 뉴욕, 뉴욕, 2018), Stranger Comes to Town(갤러리 세줄, 서울, 2017), Between the Lines: Korean Contemporary Art Since 1970 (아라리오 갤러리, 서울, 2014), The Room(토탈 미술관, 서울, 2014) 등이 있다. 그는 아시아 이민자 여성 작가들의 대화 과정을 전시로 옮기는 큐레이토리얼 프로젝트, The Faraway Nearby 를 운영하고 있다

 

 

Kyoung eun Kang and sooim lee: From This Blanket

 

Kyoung eun Kang and sooim lee, cohorts in The Faraway Nearby in 2023 and 2024, have been invited to participate in the conjunction program of the Storywork: The Prints of Marie Watt exhibition, taking place at Print Center New York on Saturday, May 4, 2024. Kang and lee will be presenting their performance piece, From This Blanket (2024).

 

The Faraway Nearby is a curatorial project that explores different ways the process of dialogue might unfold between Asian women artists, engendering feelings of both empathy and solidarity. This initiative resonates with Watt's work, delving into themes of history, community, and storytelling. The involvement of two artists in the Print Center New York program is directly linked to Watt's artistic practice. Drawing inspiration from Watt's sculpture, Blanket Stories: Great Grandmother, Pandemic, Daybreak (2021), they explore the diverse narratives within the blanket using dialogue, breath, movement, and silence. Their performance intertwines themes of life's cycles, family, care, and resilience, infusing the blanket with renewed vitality and sharing the power of storytelling with the audience.

 

 

Kyoung eun Kang is a New York-based artist born in South Korea. Kang works in a wide range of media,including performance, video, painting, photography, installation, text, and sound pieces. Kang’s work has been exhibited internationally and across the United States in galleries and museums, including: A.I.R. Gallery; Collar Works; NURTUREart; BRIC Project Room; and the ISCP project space in New York; the Korean Cultural Center in Washington, D.C.; the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery in Australia; and the National Museum of Modern Art in Korea. Kang has received residencies and fellowships at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Elizabeth Murray Artist Residency, BRIC Media Arts, the NARS Foundation, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, the LES Studio Program, ISCP, the New York Foundation for the Arts, among others. She received a BFA and MFA in painting from Hong-ik University in Seoul, South Korea and an MFA from Parsons School of Design, New York. Currently Kang is a 2023-24 studio artist at Smack Mellon. 

 

sooim lee (b. Seoul, Korea) moved to New York in 1981 and continues to live and work in New York. She received a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Painting from Hong-Ik University in Seoul (1976 and 1978, respectively) and a M.A. in Printmaking from New York University (1984). Recent solo exhibition:SOO IM LEE: across time and place, Art Projects International, New York (2017). Jiyeon Paik is a Korean immigrant and independent curator in New York. Her research concerns contemporary representations of race, gender, and aging with a particular focus on issues of marginalization, and the body in art by women and artists of color. She worked with non-profit art organizations and commercial galleries such as Gallery Hyundai, New York; DOOSAN Gallery New York, New York; Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Boston; Boston Center for the Arts, Boston; Arario Museum in SPACE, Seoul; Art Sonje Center, Seoul, among others. Her selected curatorial exhibitions include The Faraway Nearby (A.I.R. Gallery, 2024), Seeing and Being Seen (Seoul Arts Center, 2020), Detaching (Parenthesis) (DOOSAN Gallery New York, 2018), Stranger Comes to Town (Gallery Sejul, 2017), Between the Lines: Korean Contemporary Art Since 1970 (Arario Gallery, 2014), and The Room (Total Museum, 2014). Paik is currently running the curatorial project, The Faraway Nearby, that explores different ways the process of dialogue might unfold between Asian women artists, engendering feelings of both empathy and solidarity.
