‘Parasite’ Actor Lee Sun-kyun Found Dead Amid Drug Probe 

 

 

마약투약 혐의로 경찰 조사를 받아온 배우 이선균(Lee Sun Kyun, 48)씨가 12월 27일 서울 성북동의 와룡공원에서 숨진 채 발견됐다.

경찰에 따르면 이날 오전 10시 12분께 부인인 배우 전혜진씨로부터 '남편이 유서 같은 메모를 작성하고 집을 나섰다. 어제까지는 연락이 됐다. 차량도 없어졌다'는 112 신고가 접수됐다. 수색에 나선 경찰은 오전 10시 30분께 와룡공원에서 의식이 없는 이선균씨를 차량에서 발견했다. 조수석에서는 번개탄 1점이 발견됐다.

이선균씨는 1975년 서울에서 3남 1녀 중 막내로 태어나 원광대 영문과 중퇴 후 한국예술종합학교 연극원(제 1기)을 졸업했다. 2001년 MBC-TV 시트콤 '연인들'로 데뷔해 '하얀거탑' '커피프린스 1호점' '파스타' '나의 아저씨', 영화 '화차' '내 아내의 모든 것' '끝까지 간다' '기생충' 등에 출연했으며, '끝까지 간다'로 2015년 백상예술대상 남자 최우수연기상을 수상했다. 유족으로 부인 전혜진씨와 2남(이룩, 이룬)이 있다.

Prosecutors and police wield the most potent 'legitimate violence' during peacetime. Those targeted by this power often experience a severe 'mental breakdown.' The media aligns with this, subjecting the target to ridicule, slander, and insults. Unconfirmed crime details are leaked, reported, and the individual is socially ostracized.

 

The principles of presumption of innocence? The suspect’s human rights and the right to defense? They exist merely in law books and textbooks. During my brief tenure as minister, a decision was made in 2019 to amend public information rules, preventing the public disclosure of suspect facts until after the family investigation. However, both the prosecution and the media criticized me without reservation.

 

Several individuals have chosen suicide while under investigation by prosecutors and police. Yet, the investigative power refuses to take responsibility, and the media remains unaccountable. Only those deeply wounded internally, opting for death, are considered weak. It doesn't seem to concern anyone else. I am filled with anger. May the departed rest in peace.

Lee Sun-kyun, the South Korean actor who starred in Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning film Parasite and also featured in the Apple TV+ series Dr. Brain, has died in an apparent suicide. He was 48.
