금곰상: 흑인 최초, 마티 디옵의 다큐 '다호메이(Dahomey)'

홍상수(Hong Sang-soo, 64) 감독이 2월 24일 제 74회 베를린영화제에서 '여행자의 필요(A Traveler’s Needs)'로 은곰상 심사위원대상(Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize)을 수상했다. 

 

이제까지 베를린영화제 경쟁 부문에 7회 진출한 홍 감독은 이제까지 은곰상만 5회를 석권했다. 2008년 '밤과 낮(Night and Day)'로 베를린영화제 경쟁 부문에 진출한 홍 감독은 2017년 '밤의 해변에서 혼자(On the Beach at Night Alone)'으로 은곰상 여우주연상(김민희), 2020년 '도망친 여자(The Woman Who Ran_'으로 은곰상 감독상, 2021년 '인트로덕션(Introduction)'으로 은곰상 각본상, 2022년엔 '소설가의 영화(The Novelist's Film)'으로 은곰상 심사위원대상을 수상한 바 있다. 

 

그의 31번째 장편영화 '여행자의 필요'는 프랑스에서 한국으로 여행온 이리스(이자벨 위페르 분)가 생계를 위해 프랑스어를 가르치고, 바위에 누워 막걸리에 의지해 위안을 찾는 이야기를 그렸다.  이혜영, 권해효, 조윤희, 하성국, 김승윤이 출연한다. 이자벨 위페르는 '다른 나라에서(Another Country, 2012)'와 '클레어의 카메라(Claire's Camera)'에 이어 세번째 홍 감독의 영화에 출연했다. 

 

 

올 베를린영화제 최우수 작품상인 금곰상(Golden Bear for Best Film)은 세네갈계 프랑스 감독 마티 디옵(Mati Diop, 41)의 '다호메이(Dahomey)'가 수상했다. 이 영화는 식민지 시대 다호메이 왕국(1600-1904)에서 약탈되어 파리의 비유럽 미술관(Musée du Quai Branly–Jacques Chirac)에 소장된 유물 26점을 베냉(서아프리카 베닌)으로 반환하는 이야기를 담았다. 마티 디옵은 베를린영화제 역사상 최초로 금곰상을 수상한 흑인 감독이 됐다. 

 

마티 디옵은 2019년 데뷔작 '대서양(Atlantics, 2019)'로 칸영화제 경쟁부문에 진출한 흑인 여성감독이 됐으며, 심사위원대상(Grand Prix)을 수상했다. 같은해 황금종려상은 봉준호 감독의 '기생충'이 받았다. '대서양'은 2019 뉴욕영화제에서 상영됐다.

한편, '제너레이션 K-플러스' 부문에 초청된 김혜영 감독의 장편 '괜찮아 괜찮아 괜찮아!(It's Okay!)'는 어린이(11-14세) 심사위원단이 선정하는 수정곰상을 수상했다. 베를린영화제는 마틴 스콜세지 감독에게 명예 황금곰상을 헌정했다. 

 

2월 15일부터 25일까지 열린 제 47회 베를린영화제(Berlinale)는 '노예 12년'으로 스타덤에 오른 케냐-멕시코 배우 루피타 뇽오(Lupita Nyong'o)가 심사위원장을 맡았다. 한국영화는 '여행자의 필요'와 '괜찮아 괜찮아 괜찮아!' 외에도 스페셜 섹션에 허명행 감독의 '범죄도시 4(The Roundup: Punishment)', 포럼 부문에 장재현 감독의 '파묘(Exhuma)', 단편 경쟁 부문에 정유미 감독의 '서클(Circle)'이 초청 상영됐다.
