의료업계 만연한 여성 차별의 원인은?

남성 중심 연구 전통...여성은 진단, 치료 지연 경향

 

 

뉴욕타임스가 의료계에서 여성이 차별을 당해왔다고 주장하는 엘리자베스 코멘(Elizabeth Comen) 박사의 저서 “그녀의 머릿속에 있는 모든 것: 초기 의학이 여성의 신체에 관해 우리에게 가르쳐 준 진실과 거짓말, 그리고 이것이 오늘날 중요한 이유(All in Her Head: The Truth and Lies Early Medicine Taught Us About Women’s Bodies and Why It Matters Today)”를 소개했다. 

 

맨해튼 메모리얼슬로안케터링병원(Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital)의 유방암 전문의 엘리자베스 코멘 박사는 여성들이 자신의 병들거나 제멋대로인 신체에 대해 사과하려는 경향의 뿌리를 의학계에 의해 수세기에 걸쳐 쇠퇴해가는 과정에서 추적했다. 오늘날 여성은 남성보다 오진될 가능성이 더 높으며 심장병 및 일부 암 진단을 받는데 더 오랜 시간이 걸리고, 진통제를 투여받을 가능성이 낮을 수 있으며, 여성들의 증상은 불안으로 치부될 가능성이 더 높다는 것이다. 이런 여성들의 심리는 경제적으로 여유있는 백인도 마찬가지라고 관찰했다.

 

이러한 여성의 심리는 성공 원인을 자신의 능력이나 노력보다 운(luck)이라고 보는 여성의 심리와도 연관이 있는듯 하다. 가부장의 여사 속에서 여성은 도드라지는 것을 기피해왔기 때문. 그러나, 여성혐오적이거나 노인을 차별하는 의사를 만나면 오히려 진단과 치료가 잘못되거나 지연될 가능성이 농후하다.      

 

여성이 심장학 연구에 상당수 포함되기 시작한 것은 불과 25년 전이다. 오늘날 턱이나 허리통증 등 여성에게 더 흔한 심장마비 증상은 의사들이 남성에게서 자주 보지 않는 증상으로 심각하게 받아들일 가능성이 적어서 '비정형'으로 설명되고 있다는 것. 그러나, 여성의 44%는 심장병에 걸리고, 여성 5명 중 1명은 심장병으로 사망하고 있다.

 

노스웰 헬스(Northwell Health)의 심장 전문의이자 '여성에게 더 현명한 심장(Heart Smarter for Women)'의 공동 저자인 제니퍼 미에레스(Jennifer Mieres) 박사는 의사들이 진단과 치료를 위해 남성 모델을 표준으로 삼았으며, 이로 인해 여성의 심장마비에 대한 계속적인 허위 진술, 오진, 과소 인식이 초래되었다고 밝혔다. 

 

코멘 박사는 의료계에서의 성차별을 피하기 위해 3가지를 제안한다. #1 의사를 만나기 전 자신의 신체에서 정말 걱정되는 것을 인식하라 #2 목격자가 될 수 있는 친구나 가족과 동행하라 #3 의사가 마음에 들지 않으면, 새 의사를 찾을 것.

은퇴한 남자 의사로서 나는 때때로 여자 환자를 가스라이팅한 죄를 범했다는데 의심의 여지가 없다. 노인 환자로서 나는 간병인으로 여자 의사를 선호한다. 나는 그들이 남자 의사보다 더 잘 경청하고 훨씬 더 공감한다는 것을 알았다. 훌륭한 기사다.

Elizabeth Comen, MD, has dedicated her medical career to saving the lives of women. An award-winning, internationally sought-af­ter clinician and physician-scientist, Dr. Comen works as a medical oncologist with a specialty in breast cancer at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and is an assistant professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College. She earned her BA in the history of science from Harvard College and her MD from Harvard Medical School, then completed her resi­dency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital and her fellowship in oncology at Memorial Sloan Ketter­ing Cancer Center.
