올림픽 마라토너를 꿈꾸었던 외할아버지 이야기

2020년 'Tokyo Ueno Station(우에노역 공원출구)'으로 전미도서상(National Book Award) 번역문학상을 수상한 재일교포 소설가 유미리(Yu Miri)씨의 새 소설 '8월의 저편(End of August)'이 영문판으로 출간됐다.

'8월의 저편'은 올림픽 마라톤 선수를 꿈꾸었던 밀양 출신 외할아버지의 삶에서 영감을 얻은 작품으로 2002년-2004년 동아일보와 아사히신문에 동시 연재했으며, 2004년 출간됐다.

1998년 일본 요코하마에서 태어난 유미리씨는 청소년기 학폭에 시달리다가 고등학교를 중퇴하고, 뮤지컬 극단 도쿄 키드 브라더스에 입단해 연기와 연출을 배웠다. 1988년 희곡 '물 속의 친구에게'로 데뷔했다. 1995년 25세에 '물고기의 축제'로 아쿠다카와상 희곡상을 수상했다.

1997년 자전적 희곡 '가족 시네마'로 다시 아쿠타가와상을 수상했다. '가족 시네마'는 1998년 박철수 감독이 영화로 만들었다. 이름 미리(美里)는 외할아버지가 '아름다운 마을처럼 살라'고 지어준 이름이다.
