올해는 레오나르도 다 빈치(Leonardo da Vinci, 1452. 4. 15-1519. 5. 2)의 사망 500주기가 되는 해다. 르네상스 천재 레오나르도 다 빈치가 눈을 감을 무렵 자코포 틴토레토(Jacopo Tintoretto, 1519–1594)가 태어났다. 워싱턴 D.C.의 내셔널 갤러리(National Gallery of Art)에서는 틴토레토 탄생 500주년을 맞아 회고전 'Tintoretto: Artist of Renaissance Venice(3/24-7/7)'을 열고 있다.

내셔널갤러리에서는 이 회화전과 함께 드로잉전 'Drawing in Tintoretto’s Venice'(3/24-6/9)과 판화전 'Venetian Prints in the Time of Tintoretto'(3/24-6/9)도 동시에 진행 중이다. 드로잉은 빛에 민감해서 3개월 이상 전시하지 않는 것이 관례다.
북미 지역에서 최초로 열리는 틴토레토 회고전에는 50여점의 회화가 선보이고 있다. 이 전시는 베니스시민박물관재단(Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia)과 협력했다. 전시 하이라이트를 회화와 드로잉/판화로 나누어 소개한다.
