Lucio Fontana (1899–1968)는 아르헨티나의 로사리오에서 이탈리안 부모 사이에서 태어났다. 루치오는 묘지용 조각을 제작했던 아버지 루이지 폰타나의 조수로 일했다.

이탈리아 밀라노의 브레아 아카데미아에서 조각가 아돌포 윌트를 사사한 후 밀라노에서 첫 개인전을 열었다. 이후 이탈리아와 프랑스에서 추상표현주의에 가담하면서 도예와 청동 조각 작업을 했다.

1940년 아르헨티나로 돌아가 부에노스 아이레스에서 "움직임 속의 소재, 색채, 소리는 새로운 예술을 구성하는 동시적 발달의 현상이다"라는 백지 성명서에 이어 '공간주의(Spazialismo)'를 선언하며 전위미술운동을 이끌게 된다. 

폰타나는 1949년부터 캔버스와 조각에 '구멍'(Buchi)을 내는 작업을 시작했으며, 1950년대 중반부터는 캔버스를 칼로 '찢기'(Tagli) 작업으로 제 2차 세계대전 이후의 상흔을 담아냈다.
