맨해튼의 미술도서 전문 서점 맨해튼 리쫄리(Rizzoli Bookstore)에서 18일 미술사학자들의 토론회가 열렸다.

프랫인스티튜트 아그네스 베렉츠(Agnex Berecz) 교수의 신간 '100년, 100점의 미술작품: 근대와 현대미술사(100 Years, 100 Artworks: A History of Modern and Contemporary Art)'에 맞추어 홍보를 겸한 대화의 장이다. 아티스트 카린 슈나이더(Karin Schneider), 헌터대 미술사 교수 마이클 로벨(Michael Lobel)이 이 토론장에서 베렉츠가 근현대 100년을 대표하는 100점의 작품을 선정하게 된 배경과 뒷 이야기에 대한 질문을 던졌다.

'100년, 100점의 미술작품: 근대와 현대미술사'는 1919년 마르셸 뒤샹의 'L.H.O.O.Q. 모나리자'에서 시작한다. 그리고, 잭슨 폴락, 윌렘 드 쿠닝, 앤디 워홀, 조지아 오키프 등의 걸작을 연대별로 꼽으면서 프리다 칼로, 주디 시카고, 마리나 아브라모비치, 카라 워커, 야요이 쿠사마, 리지아 파페 등 여성 작가와 제이콥 로렌스, 바스키아, 엘 아나추이, 페이스 링골드 등 흑인작가들, 그리고 제 3세계 작가들을 대거 올렸다. 특히 2000년엔 한인작가 김수자씨의 '보따리 트럭'을 선정해 주목을 끌었다. 또한, 사진과 퍼포먼스 아트까지 망라하며, 균형있게 작품을 골랐다.

하지만, 마크 로스코는 빠진 대신 매튜 바니가 거론됐으며, 조셉 알버스 대신 부인 애니 알버스가 올랐다. 아그네스 베렉츠는 헝가리 출신으로 파리에서 유학했다. 때문에 오랫동안 백인남성이 우세했던 서양 미술사에서 소수계를 미술사의 지도 위에 올려놓았다. 표지는 가나 출신 나이지리아 작가 엘 아나추이의 작품 'Versatility, 2006)'이 장식했다. Prestel Publishing, $34.95
