At the end of the 20th century, Park’s acting career kicked off on a playhouse stage. Shortly after, his debut feature film, Yim Soon-rye’s Waikiki Brothers (2001), put him on the map in Chungmuro, a historic landmark in Seoul for the Korean film industry. In 2002, Park garnered his first lead role in Park Chan-ok’s Jealousy Is My Middle Name (2002) followed by his groundbreaking character eloquently portrayed in Bong Joon Ho’s timeless crime thriller, Memories of Murder (2003).

Whether depicting a reclusive 70-year-old writer or a full-hearted teenage lead vocalist of a rock band, Park Hae-il illuminates the complexity his characters by persistently surveying multiple facets of their histories, as well as their current narratives, all articulated with a keen sensibility, inquisitive mind, and, most importantly, compassion.

In Park’s storytelling, sturdiness and tenderness coexist harmoniously in every character that he portrays. His gentle gaze can hide numerous ruthless murders; his intricate gestures may be motivated by intense anger or quiet contempt. His multifaceted approach to characters guides audiences through a wide-ranging emotional landscape, awakening feelings that are unfamiliar and even, from time to time, challenging.
