학교로부터 사기 피해를 입었다고 주장한 17만 명 이상의 연방 학자금 대출자들이 총 110억 달러의 빚을 탕감받게 되었다고 뉴욕타임스가 보도했다. 

연방 정부는 조 바이든 대통령 재임 시절인 2022년 이 사건에 대해 합의, 당시 집단소송 원고로 참여했던 약 30만 명의 대출자들에 대한 학자금 대출을 탕감해준 바 있다. 이로써 집단소송 합의 대상은 총 50만 명에 가까운 대출자로 확대, 총 230억 달러의 빚을 탕감받게 된다. 이는 미 역사상 최대 규모의 집단소송 합의 사례가 됐다. 

 

2019년에 제기된 이 소송은 원고 중 한 명인 테레사 스위트(Theresa Sweet, 사진 위)와 교육부 장관 린다 맥마혼(Linda McMahon)의 이름을 따서 'Sweet v. McMahon' 케이스로 불리운다.
