“A captivating coming-of-age story that may also be the first narrative film to be truly informed by the wireless age.”
- Paul Malcolm, L.A. Weekly
“Brings a beguiling freshness to a coming-of-age story with such a buoyant, expressive flow of images that it emerges as another key contribution to the flowering of the South Korean cinema.”
- Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times
“One of the best movies I’ve seen recently about the joys and travails of young working women... The problems and characters it reveals are universal and involving, and the film itself–and its delightful cast–are so breezy, pretty and gifted, they really won my heart.”
- Michael Wilmington, Chicago Tribune
Beginning Friday, July 17, Take Care of My Cat, Jeong Jae-eun's beloved, multi-award-winning, and previously rarely screened coming-of-age film, opens for an exclusive one-week NY theatrical engagement at Metrograph In Theater.
Returning to cinemas this year, celebrating its 25th anniversary re-release, the debut feature from Jeong, one of a handful of female directors to break into the South Korean film industry, focuses on five young women, recent high school graduates living in the industrial port city of Incheon and facing a precarious future together, in addition to having to handle the practical exigencies of caring for the feline that they’ve communally adopted. Bae Doona, whose Tae-hee makes ends meet with shifts at her family’s sauna and occasional work as a typist for a cerebral palsy-afflicted poet, anchors an exceedingly fine ensemble cast in Jeong’s moving drama of fraying friendships and economic uncertainty, also one of the first films to acknowledge the increasingly central role of text messaging in 21st-century communication and find a way to integrate this new, faceless form of “keeping in touch” into a filmed narrative. A Kani Releasing release.
Accompanying the run of Take Care of My Cat, Metrograph presents the series Among Friends, a program of films centered on the dynamics of female friendships. Titles include 3 Women, Le amiche, Amoeba, Les Bonnes Femmes, Girlhood, Happy Hour, Linda Linda Linda, and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.
