최우수 뮤지컬 '슈미가둔!' 연극 '리버레이션' 

밀러 원작 '올 마이 선' 영국 올리비에상 최우수 리바이벌

 

 

2026 뉴욕 브로드웨이와 런던 웨스트엔드에서 아서 밀러가 최우수 리바이벌 연극상을 수상했다.    

제 79회 토니상 시상식에서 아서 밀러 작 '세일즈맨의 죽음(Death of a Salesman, 1949)'이 최우수 리바이벌 연극을 비롯, 6개 부문상을 휩쓸었다. 4월 열린 '영국의 토니상'인 로렌스 올리비에 상(Laurence Olivier Awards) 시상식에선 아서 밀러 원작 '올 마이 선(All My Sons, 1947)'이 최우수 리바이벌 연극상을 수상해 '아서 밀러의 해'가 되었다.

'세일즈맨의 죽음'과 '올 마이 선'은 아서 밀러가 제 2차 세계대전 직후 '아메리칸 드림'의 치명적인 헛점을 예리하게 파고 든 작품이다. 

'올 마이 선'은 자본주의 사회에서 성공과 가족 부양이라는 명목으로 사회적 책임과 공공의 선을 저버린 세대의 도덕적 파멸을 다루었다. '세일즈맨의 죽음'은 평생을 회사에 헌신했지만, 결국엔 소모품처럼 버려지는 평범한 가장 윌리 로먼의 비극을 통해 물질만능주의가 인간성을 어떻게 말살하는지를 보여준다.

두 작품이 2026년 무대에서도 여전히 강력한 생명력을 갖는 이유는 밀러의 메시지가 우리가 마주한 현실과 닮아있기 때문이다. 무한경쟁, 이기주의, 안전불감증 등은 오늘날 대기업의 환경오염 문제, 부실공사 등으로 인한 참사와 궤를 같이 한다. 아서 밀러가 1940년에 던졌던 "인간답게 산다는 것은 무엇인가?" "우리는 사회에 어떤 책임을 져야 하는가?"라는 질문은 시대를 초월하는 화두인 것이다.  

아서 밀러는 브루클린 하이츠의 네군데 타운하우스를 이사다니며 살았다. '올 마이 선'은 102 피에르폰트 스트릿에서 집필했으며, 같은 건물에 작가 노먼 메일러가 살았다. '세일즈맨의 죽음'은 그레이스 교회 인근 31 그레이스 코트에 살며 집필한 역작이다. 

 

 

 

6월 7일 맨해튼 록펠러센터 라디오시티뮤직홀에서 가수 핑크(Pink)의 사회로 열린 2026 토니상 시상식에서 최우수 뮤지컬은 TV 시리즈를 원작으로 한 '슈미가둔!(Schmigadoon!), 최우수 연극상은 베스 볼 원작 '리버레이션(Liberation)'이 차지했다. 그리고, 최우수 리바이벌 뮤지컬은 링컨센터에서 공연 중인 '래그타임(Ragtime)'이 수상했다. '슈미가둔!'과 '래그타임'은 이날 토니 트로피 4개씩을 가져갔다. 

 

토니상 2회 수상자인 린다 조(Linda Cho)는 '슈미가둔!'과 '래그타임' 2편으로 의상 디자인 후보에 올랐지만 '캐츠 젤리클 볼(Cats: The Jellicle Ball)'의 크윈 진(Qween Jean)에게 돌아갔다.  

 

연극 '자이언트'의 존 리스고와 '오이디푸스'의 레슬리 맨빌이 각각 연극 부문 남녀 주연상과 여우주연상을 수상했다. 이들은 지난해 런던 웨스트엔드 공연에도 출연해 올리비에상을 수상한 바 있다. 뮤지컬 부문 남녀 주연상은 '래그타임'의 조슈아 헨리와 캐시 레비가 거머쥐었다. 

 

CBS-TV로 중계된 시상식은 그래미 수상자인 핑크가 피터 팬 복장으로 천장에서 내려와 '피터 팬'을 비롯, '레미제라블'과 '위키드'의 OST를 부르며 시작되었다. 브로드웨이 공연  50주년을 맞아 '코러스라인(A Chorus Line)' 헌사 무대, 15주년을 맞이한 뮤지컬 '북 오브 모르몬(Book of Mormon)'의 오리지널 캐스트가 기념 공연을 했다. 그리고, 사회자 핑크는 30주년을 기념하는 뮤지컬 '시카고(Chicago)' 헌정 공연 무대에 올랐다.
