뉴욕타임스에 따르면, 2011년부터 퀸즈 자메이카의 아퀴덕트 경마장(Aqueduct Racetrack) 옆에서 전자게임만 제공하는 도박장을 운영해온 리조트 월드(Resort World)가 수년간 경쟁 끝에 라이브 테이블 게임, 딜러, 카드 게임을 갖춘 뉴욕시 최초의 상업 카지노를 개장했다. 이제까지 뉴욕시에서 가장 가까운 카지노는 포코노스, 캣츠킬, 애틀랜틱 시티, 코네티컷에 있었다. 

뉴욕의 카지노 설립 반대자들은 특히 퀸즈와 브롱스 이민자들의 도박 중독 위험성을 강조했다. 

2013년 헌법 개정으로 뉴욕시에 본격적인 카지노 설립의 길이 열린 후 뉴욕주 게임 위원회는 수년간의 로비 끝에 12월에 세 곳의 카지노 운영 허가 신청을 승인했다. 리조트 월드 외에도 2030년경 브롱스의 페리 포인트에 발리스(Bally's), 뉴욕 메츠의 홈구장인 시티필드 옆엔 하드 록(Hard Rock) 카지노가 개장될 예정이다. 리조트 월드 관계자는 새 카지노에서 1,250개의 새로운 일자리를 창출했다고 밝혔다.
