CELEBRATING MARILYN MONROE’S 100TH YEAR

MAY 29-JUNE 11 AT FILM FORUM, NYC

Including SOME LIKE IT HOT, GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, BUS STOP, HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE, THE MISFITS, NIAGARA, CLASH BY NIGHT, and many more.

Film Forum will present MARILYN 100, a 13-film series honoring the 100th birthday of screen legend Marilyn Monroe, running from Friday, May 29 through Thursday, June 11.

Born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles on June 1, 1926, Monroe worked as a model and photographer's subject before signing with 20th Century Fox at age 20, going on to become one of Hollywood's most recognizable and bankable stars in under a decade. This series charts the full arc of her brief but indelible career: the fizzy comic perfection of GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES, HOW TO MARRY A MILLIONAIRE, and MONKEY BUSINESS; gritty noir thrillers NIAGARA, CLASH BY NIGHT, and THE ASPHALT JUNGLE (her first major role, under John Huston — who would also direct her last); and Billy Wilder masterworks THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH (featuring the iconic subway grate dress scene that became one of pop culture’s most immortal images) and SOME LIKE IT HOT; and her final completed film, THE MISFITS. Marilyn died in 1962 at just 36, leaving behind a remarkable filmography that defined Hollywood stardom.

마릴린 먼로(1926-1962)

본명은 노마 진 모텐슨(Norma Jean Mortenson).

1926년 LA에서 태어나 정신병력이 있는 엄마 때문에 어린 시절 의탁 가정을 떠돌며 자랐다. 열여섯 살에 존 도허티와 결혼, 제 2차세계대전 중 남편이 해병대로 복무하러 가면서 비행기 연관 공장에서 일한다. 공원 시절 사진작가에게 발탁되어 모델 일을 시작했다.

이어 20세기 폭스사에 픽업되어 단역을 맡다가 1950년 영화 '아스팔트 정글(The Asphalt Jungle)'과 '이브의 모든 것(All About Eve)'에 출연하면서 인기를 얻게 된다. 1953년 필름 느와르 '나이애가라(Niagara)'에서 주연을 맡은 후 백치미의 금발 여성 이미지로 어필, 뮤지컬 '신사는 금발을 좋아한다Gentlemen Prefer Blondes,1953)', '백만장자와 결혼하는 법(How to Marry a Millionaire,1953)' '7년만의 외출(The Seven Year Itch, 1955)'에 연달아 출연하며 스타덤에 오른다.

먼로가 연기력을 인정받은 것은 '버스 정거장(Bus Stop, 1956)'. 이 영화로 골든글로브상 여우주연상 후보에도 올랐다. 이후 코미디 '뜨거운 것이 좋아(Some Like It Hot, 1959)'로는 골든글로브상을 수상했다. 마지막 영화는 '낙오자들(Misfits)'. 남편 아서 밀러가 시나리오를 쓰고, 존 휴스턴 감독이 메거폰을 잡고 클라크 게이블, 몽고메리 클리프트와 공연했다. 게이블이 심장마비로 사망하면서 이 영화는 먼로와 게이블의 유작이 됐다.

1954년 뉴욕 양키즈의 조 디마지오와 결혼, 일본으로 신혼여행 중 나흘간 한국을 방문해 미군 위문 공연을 했다. 디마지오와는 9개월만에 이혼했으며, 1956년'세일즈맨의 죽음'의 작가 아서 밀러와 결혼, 5년 후 이혼했다. 1962년 8월 5일 새벽 LA의 브렌트우드의 자택에서 사망한 채 발견됐다. 장례식은 전 남편 조 디마지오가 맡았고, 먼로는 LA의 웨스트우드 메모리얼파크에 잠들었다.

1999년 미영화협회(American Film Institute)는 먼로를 할리우드 사상 위대한 여성 스타 6위에 선정했다.
