한류 열풍 타고 K-미술관 방문객 급증

서울의 국립중앙박물관(National Museum of Korea, Seoul)이 2025년 방문객 650만7483명을 끌며 세계 미술관(art museum) 방문객 수 3위를 기록했다. 

영국의 미술 전문 미디어 아트뉴스페이퍼(The Art Newspaer)에 따르면, 지난해 방문객 수 1위 미술관은 904만 6천명의 루브르뮤지엄, 2위는 693만4천명의 바티칸뮤지엄으로 조사됐다. 이어 4위는 런던의 브리티시뮤지엄(대영박물관, 644만4천명), 5위는 뉴욕의 메트로폴리탄뮤지엄(598만4천명)으로 집계됐다. (*100대 뮤지엄 순위는 아래 참조)

아트뉴스페이퍼는 지역별로 가장 눈부신 상승세를 보인 곳은 한국이었다고 주목하면서 국립중앙박물관의 방문객 수는 2024년 380만명(378만8785명)에서 2025년 650만명(650만7483명)으로, 70%(1.7배) 이상 폭발적인 증가세를 기록했다고 전했다. 이와 함께 진주, 경주, 청주, 부여, 익산에 위치한 국립박물관 분관들 또한 모두 상당한 관람객 증가를 보였다고 덧붙였다. 

1945년 국립중앙박물관이 설립된 이래 최대 규모로 방문객이 급증한 이유는 지난해 6월 넷플릭스에서 공개된 애니메이션 영화 '케이팝 데몬 헌터스(KPop Demon Hunters)'가 폭발적인 인기를 끌면서 외국인 관람객들을 유치했기 때문으로 분석됐다. 지난해 외국인 관람객은 23만1192명으로 처음으로 20만명을 넘어섰다. 

한편, 35위에 오른 국립현대미술관(MMCA) 서울관은 전년 대비 28% 증가한 210만명을 기록했다. 이외에도 경주국립박물관(Gyeongju National Museum)은 방문객 197만6천313명으로 39위, 부여 국립박물관(Buyeo National Museum)은 95만862명으로 78위에 랭크됐다. 이에 대해 전 세계적으로 불고 있는 한국문화에 대한 열풍이 국내외 관람객들의 박물관 방문으로 이어지고 있는 것으로 보인다고 분석했다. K-Pop, K-Cinema의 한류 열풍이 K-Art로 이어지며 시너지 효과를 누리는 셈이다.

뉴욕의 미술관으로는 메트로폴리탄 뮤지엄이 5위(598만명), 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA)가 19위(276만명), 그리고 휘트니뮤지엄이 86위(88만5천명)에 랭크됐다. 그리고, 구겐하임뮤지엄 뉴욕은 약 76만명으로 100위 내에 들지 못했다. 반면, 구겐하임 빌바오는 130만명으로 60위에 올랐다. 

아트뉴스페이퍼는 지난해 세계 메이저 미술관(art museum)의 일부는 방문객 수가 여전히 코로나19 팬데믹 이전의 수를 회복하는데 어려움을 겪고 있는 반면, 신규 미술관과 남미 지역 미술관에 뜨거운 관심이 쏟아졌다고 전했다. 이번 조사에서 100대 미술관의 총 방문객 수는 2억명을 넘어섰지만, 2019년의 2억 3천만명에는 미치지 못했다. 그러나, 2020년의 5천4백만 명과 비교하면 비약적인 회복세를 보였다고 해설했다.

#29 K-Art: The Revival of the Korean Monochrome Painting  

In the 2010s, the global art community experienced a renaissance in Korean monochrome abstraction known as 'Dansaekhwa.' Monochromatic painters, who emerged during Korea's era of dictatorship in the 1970s, now find themselves in their prime during the twilight of their careers. I explored the history of Dansaekhwa and the masters such as the late Yun Hyong-keun, late Chung Chang-sup, late Park Seo-Bo and Chung Sang-Hwa, Ha Chong Hyun. Special exhibitions of Korean art are continuing at major art museums in the United States such as the Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum. Furthermore, Seoul has now emerged as a global art mecca.
