인공지능 생성(AI generated) 논란을 일으킨 미아 발라드(Mia Ballard)의 소설 '샤이 걸(Shy Girl)'의 출판이 취소됐다. 뉴욕타임스에 따르면, 미 최대 출판사 중 하나인 아셰트 북 그룹(Hachette Book Group)은 19일 저자 미아 발라드가 집필 과정에서 AI에 지나치게 의존했다는 온라인상 광범위한 의혹이 제기됨에 따라 출간을 철회한다고 밝혔다. 이는 NYT가 AI 생성 소설로 보이는 증거를 제시하며 아세트 측에 문의한지 하루만에 결정된 것이다. 이로써 이 소설은 아마존과 아셰트 웹사이트에서 내려갔다. 미아 발라드는 2005년 2월 자가 출판했으며, 아셰트는 4월 7일 출간 예정이었다. 

 

한편, 미아 발라드는 NYT에 '샤이 걸'을 집필할 때 AI를 사용했다는 의혹을 부인하며, 자비 출판했던 초판의 편집을 맡기기 위해 고용한 지인이 AI를 사용한 것이라고 주장했다. 발라드는 "이번 논란으로 인해 내 인생은 여러 면에서 송두리째 흔들렸고, 정신건강 또한 최악의 상태로 치달았다. 내가 직접 저지르지도 않은 일 때문에 내 이름과 명예가 완전히 실추되고 말았다"며 법적 대응을 준비 중이라고 밝혔다. 

 

'샤이 걸'은 빚을 갚기 위해 부유한 남자 네이탄과 금전적 대가를 주고받는 관계를 맺은 여자 지아가 그의 '애완동물'로 전락하는 악몽같은 감금 생활에 빠지면서 벌어지는 복수극을 그린 공포소설이다. 

 

이번 사태로 AI의 도입이 확산되고있으며, 특히 장르 소설 분야에서 기존의 대형 출판사들이 자비 출판된 도서를 흥행작 발굴을 위한 주요 통로로 주목하는 경향같은 새로운 과제와 난관을 보여주었다고 NYT는 전했다. 출판사들은 AI가 생성한 텍스트와 이미지에 대해 단호한 입장을 고수해 왔으며, 출판계약 시 저자들에게 자신의 저작물이 독창적인 것임을 증명하도록 요구하고 있다. 그러나, 사용자가 AI를 활용해 집필하는 것을 막기 위한 명확한 정책이나 조치를 갖춘 곳은 드물다.
