A Fiction Reading by Min Jin Lee

Wednesday, March 25, 7:00 PM

LeFrak Concert Hall, Queens College

Queens, NY — Writers at Queens, the Queens College Reading Series, will host a special fiction reading by acclaimed novelist Min Jin Lee on Wednesday, March 25 at 7:00 PM in LeFrak Concert Hall. The event honors Women’s History Month and the memory of Marjorie Hecht Watson, a Queens College alumna who inspired a lifelong love of literature.

The evening will feature a reading by Lee, followed by a conversation with Julie Goodale, offering insights into her writing process and literary career. The program will conclude with a reception and book signing. Kew & Willow Books will be on site with Lee’s works available for purchase.

This event is supported by a generous gift from Queens College alumnus Matthew Watson, in memory of his late wife, Marjorie Watson. Mr. Watson’s donation ensures that an author’s event highlighting women writers will continue each March in celebration of Women’s History Month.

Min Jin Lee is the bestselling author of the global sensation Pachinko and also wrote Free Food for Millionaires. Pachinko was a finalist for the National Book Award and later adapted into a major streaming television series. Her much-anticipated third novel, American Hagwon, will be released in September 2026. Lee’s work has reached millions of readers worldwide and is praised for its exploration of history, identity, and belonging.

Lee’s honors include National Book Award finalist, Dayton Literary Peace Prize runner-up, and recognition by The New York Times as one of the “100 Best Books of the Century.” She is the 2024 recipient of The Fitzgerald Prize for Literary Excellence and has received awards including the Manhae Grand Prize for Literature, the Bucheon Diaspora Literary Award, and the Samsung Creativity Award. She has also been awarded fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, Harvard Radcliffe Institute, and New York Foundation for the Arts, and is an inductee of both the NYFA Hall of Fame and the New York State Writers Hall of Fame. From September 2025 through 2027, Lee will serve as New York State Author Laureate.

Lee served as editor of Best American Short Stories 2023, and her essays and criticism have appeared in publications including The New York Times, The New Yorker, The New York Review of Books, Wall Street Journal, Travel & Leisure, Condé Nast Traveler, Vogue, and The Times of London. She currently lives in Harlem with her family and is writing a nonfiction book titled Name Recognition.

This event continues Writers at Queens’ celebration of national and New York State literary laureates, following appearances by Kimiko Hahn and Arthur Sze.

This event is co-sponsored by The Kupferberg Center for the Arts, School of the Arts, The Women and Gender Studies Program, Queens College AANAPISI Project, and Asian American Community Studies.

33 Keys to Understanding the Korean Wave
#20 K-Books and Korean Feminism
Cho Nam-Joo's novel, "Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982" (2016), has now been published in 31 countries worldwide. It examines the current state of women's human rights in Korea. In a country deeply influenced by Confucianism, there are numerous proverbs that disparage women. However, it's noteworthy that some of the world-famous female writers are either Korean women or Korean American women, including Han Kang, Susan Choi, Min Jin Lee, Don Mee Choi, and Kathy Park Hong.
