트럼프 행정부가 외국인들에게 미 국립공원 입장료를 100달러씩 추가로 인상하고, 미국인 무료 입장제인 연방 공휴일에서 마틴루터킹 데이와 준틴스 데이를 빼면서 자신의 생일을 추가한다고 발표했다. 이즈음 맨해튼 23스트릿 포스터하우스에서 열리는 1세기 전의 국립공원 포스터 특별전 '트레일을 개척하다: 도로시 워흐의 국립공원 포스터(Blazing A Trail: Dorothy Waugh’s National Parks Posters)'가 주목을 끈다. 이 전시는 조경건축가이자 아티스트였던 도로시 워흐가 1934년부터 2년간 국립공원관리청(NPS)를 위해 제작한 포스터 17점을 소개한다.  

 

도로시 워흐는 1896년 버몬트주 벌링턴에서 6자녀 사이에 태어났다. 6살 때 가족이 매사추세츠주 농업대 원예학과 교수가 된 아버지를 따라 이주해 성장했다. 미술평론가였던 엄마 덕에 자연과 미술 환경에서 그림에 뛰어난 재능을 보이게 된다. 남동생 시드니는 훗날 조각가가 됐다. 

 

수줍웠던 도로시는 가방 끈이 길었고, 경력도 화려했으며, 장수했다. 그는 펜실베니아주 벅스카운티의 퀘이커교도 기숙사학교를 거쳐 매사추세츠 미술학교, 클리블랜드 미술관 아트스쿨, 프랑스의 오를레앙 보자르 미술학교, 인디애나폴리스의 존헤론 미술학교, 트렌턴 미술학교 등 여러 아트스쿨에서 수학했다. 그리고, 매사추세추 주립대에선 조경학을 공부한 후 보스턴, 클리블랜드, 뉴올리언스, 노스캐롤라이나주 등지에서 조경가로 일했다. 

 

이후 아버지의 권유로 시카고아트인스티튜트에서 미술을 전공해 32세에 우등으로 졸업했다. 이후 시카고의 상업미술스튜디오를 거쳐 1932년엔 뉴욕으로 이주해 프리랜서로 일했다. 이듬해 국립공원관리청에 조경가 겸 아티스트로 고용됐다. 아버지가 NPS에서 오랜 경력을 쌓은 후 청장(1951-1964)으로 일했던 인물이라 빽이 작용했을 터이다.

워흐는 국립공원의 포스터 프로젝트를 맡아 그리고, 디자인을 수집 추천하는 자문위원으로 일했다. 1937년엔 NPS를 떠나 유명 출판사 알프레드 A. 크노프의 아동부서 책임자를 지냈다. 이어 뉴저지주 몽클레어도서관의 홍보일을 맡으면서 맨해튼 파슨스 디자인스쿨에서 타이포그래피와 제작을 강의했다. 이듬해엔 쿠퍼유니온대학에서 광고 디자인을 가르쳤다. 워흐는 1965년 도서관에서 은퇴할 때까지 시장실의 홍보 전문가로도 일했다. 

 

도로시 워흐는 그림 뿐만 아니라 동화책도 썼다. '나뭇잎과 풀 사이에서(Among the Leaves and Grasses, 1932)', '따뜻한 대지(Warm Earth, 1942)', '뮤리엘이 끈을 구하다(Muriel Saves String, 1956)'를 출간했으며, 29권이 넘는 책에 삽화를 그렸다. 시인 에밀리 디킨슨 전문가였던 그는 '에밀리 디킨슨의 연인: 한 가지 추측(Emily Dickinson’s Beloved: A Surmise, 1976)'을 저술했다. 그는 뉴저지 라디오 방송국(WVNJ)에서 7년간 인터뷰 프로그램을 진행하기도 했다. 도로시 워흐는 1996년 99세 나이로 세상을 떠났다.

The 17 travel posters Dorothy Waugh created for the National Park Service between 1934 and 1936 are significant cultural records of the Great Depression and mark a turning point in American graphic design. Although Waugh began her work for the NPS in 1933 as a landscape architect, she was also a highly trained artist. She advocated for the bureau to produce its own poster campaign, separate from those of the railroads and with its own style and messaging.

 

The resulting poster series was the first time the government had assigned such an ambitious project to a single designer, let alone a female modernist. Until now, however, there has been little research on them or on their originator. This exhibition and its accompanying book, based on private and government documents, is the first dedicated to the entire campaign, which heralded an outpouring of government posters for the rest of the 20th century.

 

Mark Resnick is an authority on the history of American graphic design, a field in which he curates, publishes, and lectures. He has also served as an art museum director, as chief business and legal executive at major film companies, and on various arts-related boards. He is the founder of Resnick Arts and Culture Consulting, which advises cultural institutions and their leaders on a wide range of matters and counsels major collectors on the sale or donation of their collections.
