워싱턴 DC의 내셔널갤러리에서 12월 5일 오후 1시 미 사실주의 화가 조지 벨로스(George Bellows, 1882-1925)의 뉴욕 풍경화 'New York'(1911) 해설 강연을 줌(Zoom)으로 연다. 예약 필수. 

 

조지 벨로수는 오하이오주 콜럼버스에서 태어났다. 롱아일랜드 새그하버의 고래잡이 선장 딸이었던 엄마 덕에 여름에는 롱아일랜드에서 보냈다. 10대에 육상, 야구와 농구를 했지만, 그림에 재능을 보여 잡지에 일러스트레이션을 그렸다. 

 

오아이오주립대를 거쳐 뉴욕으로 이주해 뉴욕아트스쿨에서 공부하며 애쉬캔 학파와 교류했다. 이후 뉴욕아트스튜던트리그와 시카고아트인스티튜트에서 가르쳤다.

 

벨로스는 업스테이트 우드스톡에서 살면서 뉴욕의 풍경을 그렸다. 그가 애호하던 소재 중 하나는 바다로 평생 250여점을 그렸으며, 석판화 작업도 즐겼다. 1925년 복막염으로 사망해 브루클린 그린우드 묘지에 묻혔다.

George Bellows’s New York is the inspiration for this interactive conversation. Join us for a one-hour virtual session and share your observations, interpretations, questions, and ideas about this work of art.

These conversations will encourage you to engage deeply with art, with others, and with the world around you as you hone skills in visual literacy and perspective-taking.

This program is free, open to the public, and is designed for everyone interested in talking about art. No art or art history background is required. Ages 18 and over. Closed captioning is available to all participants.
