Metrograph Presents a Four-Film Program of the Franco-Galician Filmmaker's Directing Work To Date
Oliver Laxe's Latest Breakout Feature, the Cannes Jury Prize Winning SIRĀT, Screens on December 5 with Director In Person for Q&A
Metrograph presents The Burning Visions of Oliver Laxe, a career-spanning series taking place while the director's latest rolls out as a 2025 Oscar hopeful, beginning December 5 at Metrograph In Theater.
Oliver Laxe has been admired by filmgoers with an interest in the mystical side of cinema and the curious compounds created through the intermixing of documentary and fiction since the appearance of his 2010 feature debut You Are All Captains, made in collaboration with students at a filmmaking workshop for impoverished youths in Tangier. Now, the Franco-Galician director stands on the brink of a wider breakthrough. His latest film, Sirāt, which won the Jury Prize at the 78th Cannes Film Festival, is a hallucinatory odyssey across the wilds of southern Morocco—its lunar landscapes among many astonishing vistas explored in Laxe’s cinema—draws new acolytes to this sensorially overwhelming, visually arresting brand of filmmaking. Metrograph revisits his body of work to date, with Laxe himself stopping by to present a special screening of Sirāt.
The Burning Visions of Oliver Laxe runs from December 5 to December 6, with select encore screenings to follow.
Titles include Fire Will Come, Mimosas, Sirāt, and You All Are Captains.
Director Oliver Laxe in person on Friday, December 5 for a Q&A following Sirāt and to introduce Fire Will Come.
시라트 SIRĀT
2025, 115 min, DCP
Its title a reference to the Islamic term for the narrow bridge that one crosses over hell en route to paradise, Laxe’s sun-bleached survivalist white-knuckler—joint winner of the Jury Prize at the most recent Cannes Film Festival, and the Spanish entry for the 98th Academy Awards—is a film of ecstasy and purgatory, of physical trials and spiritual elevation. It follows the middle-aged Luis (Sergi López) as he arrives in Morocco, his young son and pet dog in tow, to follow the trail of his adult daughter, now five months missing, whom he fears has joined an acid-fried band of roving sybarites who’ve plunged into the desert in search of a fabled rave. A persistent techno score by Kanding Ray (awarded Best Soundtrack at Cannes), alternately trancelike and urgent, combines with the majestic aridity of the landscape to imbue Sirāt with a sense of apocalyptic augury, delivered upon in its explosive and unforeseeable plot twists. A NEON release.
Q&A with director Oliver Laxe on Friday, December 5.

FIRE WILL COME
2019, 86 min, DCP
Filmed in and around the village in Galicia’s Serra dos Ancares mountains where the director’s grandparents were born, Fire Will Come is the story of Amador (Amador Arias), a convicted firebug who, having finished serving out a prison sentence for arson, has come home to live with his mother, Benedicta (Benedicta Sanchez, like Arias, a nonprofessional actor), his awkward attempts to acclimate himself to life on the outside complicated when an out-of-control blaze devastates the countryside and already-suspicious neighbors’ tongues commence to wagging. A contemplative film about everyday life as lived in a place where the majesty of nature is a constant, unavoidable fact, regarding with reverent awe both the lush landscapes of the “Green Spain” of the northwest and the tongues of flame that threaten to consume it.

2016, 96 min, DCP
Described by its director as a “religious Western,” Laxe’s beguiling Mimosas—divided into three sections, each named for a prayer position in the Islamic rak’a—follows a young man (Shakib Ben Omar) who is charged with leading a dying sheikh and his caravan across the Moroccan desert and the narrow, winding paths that lead through the Atlas Mountains en route to the ancient city of Sijilmasa. His journey, which appears at various points to be occurring in the present-day and at an unidentified point in the distant past, passes through landscapes majestic in their lunar desolation. A cryptic, open-ended parable, breathtaking in its barren beauty and abundant with prospective interpretations—and also in many regards a precursor to the director’s Sirāt, with Laxe’s chance encounter with a rave taking place in a Moroccan pine grove during the Mimosas shoot providing inspiration for his latest film.

YOU ALL ARE CAPTAINS
2010, 78 min, DCP
Born out of a filmmaking workshop that Laxe, beginning in 2007, conducted with the children of poor families in Tangier, the director’s feature debut begins by depicting just such a workshop, its teacher portrayed by Laxe himself, then lights off into uncharted terrain when his pupils, rankling at his obliviously paternalistic oversight, mutiny and make the film their own. An audaciously original, endlessly imaginative documentary-narrative hybrid with much to import concerning the complex power dynamics between the one who films and the one who is doing the filming, as well as those between Europe and its former colonial subjects. “Poses a simple question—how to make a movie that has both the symbolic grandeur of big pop entertainment and the personal importance of family pictures—and the film itself offers some heuristic, tentative, yet remarkably reverberant answers.” —Richard Brody, The New Yorker

*NYFF63 (1) Sirāt and the Allegory of Life ★★★★★ <English version>
Sirāt by Oliver Laxe #NYFF63

Sirāt by Oliver Laxe #NYFF63

Sirāt by Oliver Laxe #NYFF63

Sirāt by Oliver Laxe #NYFF63

Sirāt by Oliver Laxe #NYFF63

Sirāt by Oliver Laxe #NYFF63
All That Cinema!
