미 인물화가 존 싱어 사전트(John Singer Sargent, 1856–1925)에 가려졌던 여동생 에밀리 사전트(Emily Sargent, 1857–1936)의 수채화를 소개하는 특별전 'Emily Sargent: Portrait of a Family'이 2025년 7월 1일부터 2026년 3월 8일까지 메트로폴리탄뮤지엄 아메리칸윙의 갤러리 773에서 열린다. 에밀리 사전트의 풍경 수채화와 오빠 존 싱어 사전트의 작품을 소개하며, 아마추어 수채화가였던 엄마 메리 뉴볼드 사전트(Mary Newbold Sargent)의 스케치북(1904)도볼 수 있다.

Emily Sargent’s watercolors—recently rediscovered—capture the world with a clarity and expressiveness that were all her own. This exhibition brings her luminous work into focus, situating it within the creative, complex world of the Sargent family.

This unique presentation features watercolors by Emily Sargent (1857–1936), her older brother, renowned portraitist John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), and their mother, Mary Newbold Sargent (1826–1906). As the artistic family traveled seasonally through Europe, Mary encouraged her children’s creative aspirations. The siblings had a close relationship and often sketched and painted side by side. As John Singer Sargent’s bold portraits increasingly garnered critical attention, his younger sister Emily supported his career while building a body of work of her own that remained largely unseen.

Drawn entirely from The Met collection, Emily Sargent: Portrait of a Family takes a close look at their art and explores how paths diverged for daughter and son, revealing the challenges women artists faced in the late 19th century. Intended as a complement to The Met’s Sargent and Paris, this exhibition celebrates the recent gift—from the artists’ heirs—of 26 Emily Sargent watercolors, which will be making their debut. This generous gift continues a long legacy of family giving that formed the foundation of the Museum’s extensive Sargent holdings.

뒤늦게 발굴된 화가 에밀리 사전트의 작품 세계

존 싱어 사전트(John Singer Sargent, 1856-1925)의 여동생 에밀리 사전트(Emily Sargent, 1857-1936)의 개인전 'Emily Sargent, A Glimpse Into Her World'이 매사추세츠주 글로우체스터의 케이프앤 뮤지엄(Cape Ann Museum)에서 열리고 있다. 

에밀리 사전트의 재능은 가족에게 비밀로 남아 있다가 1998년 그의 조카가 낡은 트렁크 안에서 수채화 440점을 발견하게된다. 그리고 보스턴미술관(45점), 런던 테이트미술관(29점), 메트로폴리탄미술관(22점), 브루클린미술관(20점) 등 에밀리의 작품을 7개 미술관에 기증했다.

존과 에밀리 사전트의 아버지는 매사추세츠의 글로우체스터 출신으로 필라델피아에서 안과의사로 일했다. 존의 누이가 2살 때 사망하자, 엄마는 신경쇠약을 겪게 되어 부모는 치유를 위해 유럽으로 이주한다. 사전트 가족은 파리에 정착한 후 독일, 이탈리아, 스위스로 계절마다 이주하며 살았다. 

1857년 이탈리아에서 태어난 에밀리 사전트는 4살 때 사고로 심한 척추부상을 입은 후 평생 나약한 체질을 갖게 된다. 가족과 이탈리아, 스페인, 스위스, 튀니지, 팔레스타인, 이집트 등지를 여행하며 시야를 넓혔다. 엄마는 아이들에게 매일 최소한 한개의 스케치를 그리도록 격려했다. 하지만, 존 사전트만 파리의 미술학교 에콜데보자르로 유학 보냈다.

에밀리는 1889년 아버지가 사망한 후 30대까지 붓을 놓았다가 1990년 경부터 재기한 것으로 추정되고 있다. 남녀평등의 개념이 없던 당시 에밀리는 자신의 작품을 전시, 판매하는 것을 생각하지 못했다. 1908년 런던의 화이트채플 갤러리에서 열린 그룹전에 거장의 작품을 복하한 몇점을 기증하면서 전시에 딱 한번 선보이게 된다. 

그녀의 주업무는 오빠 존을 위한 파티를 열고, 그의 작품을 홍보하고, 수집가들에게 판매했다. 존과 에밀리는 평생 독신으로 가까이 지냈다. 존은 유화 900여점, 수채화 2천여점을 남기고 1925년 런던에서 세상을 떠났다.

아버지의 고향 글로우체스터 케이프앤뮤지엄에서 열리는 'Emily Sargent, A Glimpse Into Her World' 전시는 오는 5월 7일까지 계속된다.
