The Ahn Trio Celebrates Laurie Spiegel’s 80th Birthday with New EP (Nov. 16) and Live Release Concert (Dec. 2)

(New York, NY) – Lucia Ahn (piano) and Maria Ahn (cello) of The Ahn Trio Ensemble announce the release of a new recording featuring music by visionary composer and electronic music pioneer Laurie Spiegel.

Spiegel, a trailblazer in computer music and algorithmic composition, is celebrated for her innovations in early synthesizer technology and for developing Music Mouse – An Intelligent Instrument (1986), a groundbreaking algorithmic composition software for Mac—created long before the concept of AI-assisted music existed. This new EP arrives in celebration of Spiegel’s 80th birthday year, paying tribute to her remarkable influence across electronic and contemporary classical music.

The recording highlights Spiegel’s acoustic works for piano and cello, offering listeners a rare glimpse into a more intimate side of her artistry. While Spiegel is best known for her pioneering electronic compositions, these acoustic works reveal an even deeper lyricism and an irresistible hypnotic quality that makes her music so compelling across her entire body of work. The five-track EP includes Island of Peace, written specifically for Lucia and Maria Ahn and based on Spiegel’s The Unquestioned Answer; A Paraphrase Plus takes Bach’s Prelude in C Major as a point of departure, unfolding into Spiegel’s distinctive harmonic world.; and solo renditions of The Unquestioned Answer (originally from The Expanding Universe, 1980), An Album Leaf for solo piano, and A Fall Afternoon for solo cello.

Fully embracing Spiegel’s ethos to “focus more completely on the aspects of music that cannot be reduced to logic,” the Ahn Trio Ensemble brings emotional depth and connection to Spiegel’s creative spirit.

The Ahn Trio, dubbed, classical revolutionaries and champions of new music, have long been recognized for their passion for performing new music and expanding the boundaries of the contemporary chamber music.

To celebrate the release of Laurie Spiegel’s music, Ahn Trio will perform with Ahn Trio’s new Grammy winning violinist Zach Brock and special guest performer, Tae Hong Park(박태홍, 베이스주자/작곡가) at the City Winery LOFT (25 11th Avenue (Pier 57), New York, NY 10011 on December 2nd, at 7PM.
