'카바레' 수익 8천 8백만불...9월 21일 폐막

투자자 "수익금, 보상적 징벌적 손해배상 요구"

브로드웨이 리바이벌 '카바레(Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, 2024)'에 5만 달러를 투자한 제임스 로렌조 워커 주니어(James Lorenzo Walker Jr.)씨가 8월 29일 제작진을 사기 혐의로 고소했다. 워커 주니어씨는 2024년 4월 개막 후 9천만 달러 이상을 수익을 올렸음에도 불구하고 투자금 반환도, 수익 배분도 받지 못했다고 소장에서 주장했다.

 

제임스 로렌조 워커 주니어씨는 엔터테인먼트 변호사이며, 뮤지컬 'MJ', '헬스 키친', '부에노 비스타 소셜 클럽'에도 투자했다. 그는 소장에서 '카바레'의 재무기록, 투자자들에게 지급된 수익금, 보상적 손해배상, 징벌적 손해배상, 그리고 변호사 수임료를 요구하면서 배심원 재판을 청구했다.

Playbill.com에 따르면, '카바레' 프로듀서들은 수석 프로듀서(ATG Productions, Underbelly, Gavin Kalin Productions, Hunter Arnold, Smith & Brant Theatricals, Wessex Grove)들은 투자자 네트워크를 활용, 2,400만 달러를 모금했다. 2,400만 달러에는 오거스트윌슨 시어터를 보수해 프로시니엄 하우스에서 원형 공연 공간으로 바꾸는 비용 750만 달러가 포함됐다. 

 

'카바레'는 영화 '사랑의 이해(The Theory of Everything, 2014)'에서 스티븐 호킹 역으로 오스카 남우주연상을 수상한 에디 레드메인(Eddie Redmayne)과 게일 랭킨(Gayle Rankin) 주연으로 오거스트 윌슨 시어터에서 공연되면서 지난해 5월 당시 주간 흥행 수익이 200만 달러로 최고치를 기록했다. 

 

 

 

하지만, 2024년 9월 14일, 주연 에디 레드메인과 게일 랭킨이 하차하면서 주간 수익은 급격히 감소했다. 그 이후 몇 달 동안 수익은 하락세를 보이며 대부분의 기간 동안 적자를 기록했다. 2025년 9월 7일로 끝나는 주에는 38만 5천160달러의 수익을 올렸다. 이제까지 총 수익은 8천 8백만 달러로 알려졌다. 

 

게다가 주연을 맡은 빌리 포터가 패혈증으로 입원했다. '카바레'는 예정보다 1개월 앞선 9월 21일 막을 내릴 예정이다.
