퍼블릭시어터가 8월 29일부터 9월 2일까지 매일 오후 8시에 세인트존더디바인 대성당에서 셰익스피어의 '페리클레스(Pericles, 1607)' 무료 콘서트를 연다.  

 

'페리클레스'는 안티오크 왕국의 비밀을 알게된 타이르의 왕자 페리클레스가 목숨에 위협을 느끼고 여러나라를 도피하며 벌어지는 이야기다. 셰익스피어의 4대 로맨스로 불리우는 '태풍(The Tempest)', '겨울이야기(The Winters Tale)', '심벌린(Cymbeline)'에 비해 덜 알려졌지만, 셰익스피어 시대 '로미오와 줄리엣(Romeo & Juliet), '햄릿(Hamlet)', '리처드 3세(Richard III)'과 함께 인기 레퍼토리로 공연됐던 작품이다.

트로이 안소니(Troy Anthony)가 가스펠 음악에서 영감을 얻어 19곡의 작사와 작곡을 맡았으며, 티파니 리-피셔(Tiffany Rea-Fisher) 안무, 칼 코필드(Carl Cofield)의 연출작이다. 셰익스피어 작품이 할렘 아티스트들에 의해 때론 흑인 교회, 때론 브로드웨이 뮤지컬, 때론 아프리카 토속음악을 배경으로 동화같은 이야기로 펼쳐진다. 

 

예약은 필요없으며, 선착순으로 앉을 수 있다. 곳곳에 스크린이 설치되어 멀리서도 즐길 수 있다.

This season’s Public Works production is a powerful concert experience of PERICLES, the Bard’s epic about losing and re-discovering faith. Reconceived by playwright and songwriter Troy Anthony, this magnificent new production performed by Public Works community members from all over New York City, is a celebration of life, love, and transformation. Inspired by Gospel music and the rousing power of the Black church, this new concert adaptation will be performed in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Associate Artistic Director of the Classical Theatre of Harlem Carl Cofield directs.

Performances will take place at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine at 1047 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10025.

Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis and is not guaranteed. There is no ticket distribution, and a reservation is not required.
