국제자금세탁용 미술품 압수, 미법무부 보관 후 경매 

 

 

 

말레이시아 개발 베르하드(1MDB) 스캔달로 미 법무부에서 보관해온 피카소, 바스키아, 디안 아버스의 작품 4점이 미 연방보안관청(US Marshals Service)의 온라인 경매에 부쳐졌다. 

 

아트뉴스(ArtNews.com)에 따르면, 텍사스주 플루거빌에 위치한 경매사 가스통앤쉬한(Gaston and Sheehan)은 장 미셸 바스키아의 '자화상'(1982)과 콜라주 작품 '레드 맨 원(Red Man One)'(1982), 파블로 피카소의 '황소머리와 피처 (Tête de taureau et broc)'(1939),' 그리고 사진작가 디안 아버스의 '장난감 수류탄을 든 아이(Child with a Toy Hand Grenade)'를 경매한다. 온라인 경매는 7월 16일에 시작해 9월 4일에 마감된다. 이 경매에선 구매자 수수료(buyer's premium)가 없다.

2020년 7월 법무부가 제출한 문서에 따르면, 바스키아의 '자화상'은 전 말레이시아 총리의 의붓아들인 리자 샤리즈 빈 압둘 아지즈와 함께 레드그래닛픽처스를 공동 설립한 크리스토퍼 조이 맥팔랜드가 미국 정부에 반납한 것이다. 맥팔랜드와 아지즈는 2013년 마틴 스콜세지 감독의 '울프 오브 월스트리트'를 제작했다. 나머지 세 점의 작품은 2012년부터 2014년 사이에 말레이시아 사업가이자 도주 중인 로우 택 조(일명 조 로우)가 구입해 '울프 오브 월스트리트'의 주연이자 제작자인 배우 레오나르도 디카프리오에게 기증했다. 디카프리오는 2017년 세 작품을 모두 미국 정부에 반납했다.

 

로우는 현재 1MDB 스캔들에서 핵심적인 역할을 한 혐의로 인터폴을 포함한 여러 국가에서 수배 중이다. 법무부는 2009년부터 2015년까지 말레이시아 국부투자개발기금에서 45억 달러 이상이 "1MDB 고위 관계자와 그 측근, 그리고 로우 택 조에 의해 국제자금세탁 및 횡령과 관련된 범죄 계획을 통해" 도난당했다고 보고 있다.

The rectangular support is angled - lacking the right upper corner, a stretcher bar extends beyond the painting in the lower left corner. Previously Sotheby's lot 23, May 12, 2009. Exhibition label verso: Van de Weghe Fine Art, [Basquiat: Paintings, November - December 2008] NY. Uneven in shape, overall dimensions: H-76" x W-48" x D-3.75". This work is mounted in a traveling shadow box frame/crate with a white painted backboard. Shadow Box: H-82" x W-53" x D-~6.75" closed and fits into the shipping crate.
