Sonya Chung to Step Down as Director of Film Forum;

Board of Directors Launches Search For Executive Director

NEW YORK, NY – Sonya Chung, Director of Film Forum, NYC’s leading non-profit independent cinema since 1970, has announced plans to step down from her role at the end of this year.

 

During her leadership tenure (Deputy Director 2020-23; Director since July 1, 2023), Chung helped Film Forum weather the closure period and complex reopening process during the COVID pandemic, led the growth of audience outreach and organizational partnerships, co-programmed new-release films with Karen Cooper—Film Forum’s director from 1972 to 2023—and Premieres Artistic Director Mike Maggiore, and participated in the management team that negotiated Film Forum’s first union contract with the Technical, Office and Professional Union Local 2110 UAW. 

 

Film Forum’s admissions broke box-office records for two consecutive years under Chung’s leadership. The presentation of bold, urgent new films, alongside unmatched repertory programming led by founding Repertory Artistic Director Bruce Goldstein, drove this success. Chung also helped grow and deepen the commitment of a robust membership and donor base, ensuring Film Forum’s nonprofit mission to show challenging, underrecognized films regardless of commercial potential.

 

“Sonya has evolved management and organizational structures with an eye to the future, laying the groundwork for Film Forum’s long-term capacity to serve its devoted audience, philanthropic supporters, the independent film industry, and the NYC cultural community,” says Film Forum Board Chair Gray Coleman (Partner, Davis Wright Tremaine LLP). “She leaves the organization in fine form for her successor—and for the next generation of filmgoers.”

Film Forum’s Board of Directors has formed a search committee to be headed by Coleman and Stella Strazdas (together the executive committee of the board). The committee has engaged Tom O’Connor Consulting Group to lead a national search to fill the position, led by Edie Demas, Vice President, Organizational Strategy and Brenna Thomas, Search Consultant. <Updated, July 21, 2025>

맨해튼 다운타운의 예술영화관 필름포럼(Film Forum, 209 West Houston St.)의 카렌 쿠퍼(Karen Cooper, 74) 디렉터가 50년만에 자리에서 물러나고, 한국계 소냐 정(Sonya Chung, 49)이 디렉터로 임명됐다. 소냐 정씨의 임기는 오는 7월 1일부터 시작되며, 쿠퍼는 프리미어 프로그래밍과 기금 조성에 촛점을 맞추고, 소냐 정의 고문 역할을 하게 된다.  필름포럼의 게리 콜만이 이끄는 이사회는 지난해 11월 만장일치의 투표로 디렉터를 선정했다. 

 

소냐 정은 워싱턴 DC에서 태어나 메릴랜드 교외에서 성장했다. 컬럼비아대 졸업 후 시애틀 워싱턴대에서 석사학위를 받았다. 2003년부터 5년간 개발 디렉터로 일한 후 소설 'Long for This World'(2010)와 'The Lobed Ones'(2016)을 출간했으며, 컬럼비아대학교에서 소설 작법을 가르쳤으며, 사라토가스프링스의 스키드모어대의 거주작가 겸 조교수를 지냈다. 

 

2018년 카렌 쿠퍼 디렉터와 마이크 마지오레 예술감독의 요청으로 필름포럼에 복귀, 국제 영화제에 참석하고, 개봉 영화를 추천했다. 2020년 초엔 부 디렉터로 임명되어 코로나 팬데믹 동안 필름포럼의 버추얼 시네마 프로그래밍과 홍보를 지원했다.

필름포럼은 1970년 영화광 피터 파인스타인(Peter Feinstein)과 샌디 밀러(Sandy Miller)가 걸립,연 1만8천 달러의 예산의 독립영화 상영관으로 시작됐다. 카렌 쿠퍼는 1972년 가을 23세에 맨해튼 어퍼웨스트사이드의 50석 로프트 공간의 영화관을 맡았다. 이후 연간 6백만 달러, 4개의 스크린에 독립영화 개봉 및 클래식(고전영화) 레퍼토리 프로그램으로 뉴욕의 몇개 안되는 독립영화관으로 자리매김했다. 고전영화의 프로그래밍은 브루스 골드스타인(Bruce Goldstein) 예술감독이 맡아왔으며, 쿠퍼는 1996년부터 마이크 마지오레( Mike Maggiore) 예술감독과 개봉작을 프로그래밍해왔다.

카렌 쿠퍼 디렉터는 샹탈 애커만(Chantal Akerman), 매튜 바니(Matthew Barney), 찰스 버넷(Charles Burnett), 데이빗 크로넨버그(David Cronenberg), 테렌스 데이비스(Terence Davies), 아스가 파하디(Asghar Farhadi), 마이클 하네케(Michael Haneke), 허우 시아오셴(Hou Hsiao-hsien), 마이크 리(Mike Leigh), 미라 나이르(Mira Nair), 크리스토퍼 놀란(Christopher Nolan), 프랑소아즈 오존(François Ozon), 알렉산더 소쿠로프(Alexander Sokurov), 안드레이 타르코프스키(Andrei Tarkovsky), 아그네스 바르다(Agnès Varda), 왕가위(Wong Kar-wai), 클로이 자오(Chloé Zhao,) 등을 초기에 필름포럼에 소개했다. 스미스 칼리지를 졸업한 쿠퍼는 1995년 미영화협회(American Film Institute)에서 명예박사 학위를 받았다.
