40-FILM FESTIVAL OF GUN TOTING, BANK ROBBING, ALIEN BLASTING, CRIMEFIGHTING BAD ASS LEADING LADIES
WOMEN IN ACTION, a forty-film festival of gun toting, bank robbing, alien blasting, and crimefighting bad ass leading ladies in films spanning genres and decades from the silent era to the twenty-tens, will run at Film Forum from Friday, August 15 through Thursday, September 4 (three weeks). Maggie Cheung, Gena Rowlands, Michelle Yeoh, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Crawford, Barbara Stanwyck, Tamara Dobson, Faye Dunaway, Jodie Foster, Uma Thurman, and more star.
On Saturday, August 30, join us for an all-day tribute to Pam Grier, the baddest one-chick hit squad that ever hit town! Featuring THE BIG DOLL HOUSE (at 1:00), an explosive early showcase of Grier’s talent, her most iconic performances in COFFY (at 3:15) and FOXY BROWN (at 5:20), and Quentin Tarantino’s homage to her legacy, JACKIE BROWN (at 7:30). Film Critic and author Odie Henderson (Black Caesars and Foxy Cleopatras, Abrams Press) will introduce THE BIG DOLL HOUSE and COFFY.
SILENT WOMEN IN ACTION, a program celebrating the great female action stars of early silent serials, including Pearl White (The Perils of Pauline, 1914), Ruth Roland (The Timber Queen, 1922), and Helen Holmes and Helen Gibson (successive stars of The Hazards of Helen, 1914-1917), will run on Monday, August 25 at 6:00, with digital and 35mm restorations from the Academy Film Archive, the Library of Congress, FPA Classics (Lobster Films Collection) and the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Introduced by Mallory O’Meara, author of the new book, Daughter of Daring: The Trick-Riding, Train-Leaping, Road-Racing life of Helen Gibson (HarperCollins). Book signing in lobby following the screening.
