올해는 노예 해방 160주년을 맞는다. 에이브라함 링컨 대통령이 노예해방선언문(Emancipation Proclamation)을 발표한 지 2년 후인 1865년 6월 19일 텍사스주 캘버스턴의 노예들에게 자유가 찾아왔다. 2021년 조 바이든 대통령이 공식 연방 공휴일로 지정했다. 뉴욕 소더비에선 링컨이 사인한 수정헌법 제 13조와 노예해방선언문이 전시 경매된다. 2025년 준틴스 뉴욕 행사를 알아본다.

#준틴스 Juneteenth는 무슨 날?

미국에서 노예제도의 종식을 기념하는 해방의 날이다. 흑인 문화를 배우고, 치유하고, 축하하는 시간. 모든 인종들간의 평등을 생각해보는 날. 

노예가 해방된 날은 아니다. 에이브라함 링컨 대통령은 1863년 1월 1일 남부 연합주에서 노예해방선언에 서명했다. 1865년 6월 19일 연합군이 텍사스주 갤버스턴에 도착, 노예들에게 남북전쟁이 종식됐으며, 노예 해방이 되었다고 알린 날이다. June과 19th(19일)를 합성해서 이름을 지었다.

원래 준틴스의 공식 깃발은 블루, 레드, 화이트로 흑인들이 미국인이라는 것을 상징했다. 하지만, 흑인 커뮤니티에서 범아프리카의 국기색인 레드, 블랙, 그린을 채택했다. 빨강은 피, 검은색은 땅, 녹색은 번영을 상징한다.
