라 스칼라 247년 역사상 최초 아시안 음악감독 

다니엘 바렌보임에 이어 두번째 비 이탈리아 출신

정명훈(Myung-whun Chung, 72) 지휘자가 이탈리아 밀라노의 오페라단 라 스칼라(Teatro alla Scala) 247년 사상 최초의 아시아 출신 음악감독(music director)으로 임명됐다. 라 스칼라 이사회는 12일 만장일치로 이를 승인했다고 뉴욕타임스가 전했다. 정명훈씨는 2027년부터 리카르도 샤이(Riccardo Chailly)의 뒤를 이어 3년간의 임기를 시작하게 된다. 

라 스칼라 역사에서 이탈리아 출신이 아닌 지휘자로 음악감독을 맡은 것은 아르헨티나에서 태어난 유대계 다니엘 바렌보임(Daniel Barenboim, 2007-2014) 뿐이다. 정 지휘자는 1989년부터 라 스칼라는 9개의 오페라에 84회 공연의 지휘봉을 잡았으며, 141회의 콘서트를 이끌었다. 2023년엔 라 스칼라 뮤지션들로 구성된 밀라노 필하르모니카델라스칼라의 명예 지휘자로 임명되기도 했다. 

1953년 부산에서 태어나 서울에서 자란 그는 다섯살 때부터 피아노를 배우기 시작, 7세에 서울시립교향악단과 하이든의 피아노 콘체르토 제 11번을 협연했다. 이듬해 미국으로 이주, 마네스음대와 줄리아드에서 지휘를 전공했다. 1974년 차이코프스키 콩쿠르에서 피아노 부문 공동 2위를 차지했으며, 1978년 LA필하모닉 부지휘자를 거쳐 독일 자르브뤼켄방송오케스트라, 프랑스 국립 바스티유 오페라단, 라디오프랑스 필하모닉 오케스트라, 서울시향 등의 음악감독을 지냈다. 현재는 독일 드레스덴 슈타츠카펠레 수석 객원지휘자이자 라디오프랑스 필하모닉 오케스트라 명예 음악감독, KBS교향악단 계관 지휘자 등을 맡고 있다. 

1778년 개관한 라 스칼라는 뉴욕 메트로폴리탄 오페라하우스, 런던 로열 오페라와 함께 세계 3대 오페라단으로 꼽힌다. 이 극장에선 벨리니 작곡 '노르마(Norma, 1831)', 베르디의 '나부코(Nabucco, 1842)', '오텔로(Otello, 1887)', '팔스타프(Falstaff, 1893)', 푸치니 작곡 '나비 부인(Madama Butterfly, 1904)'와 '투란도트(Turandot, 1926)' 등이 세계 초연된 곳이다. 라 스칼라엔 아르투로 토스카니니를 필두로 클라우디오 아바도, 리카르도 무티, 다니엘 바렌보임 등이 음악감독을 지냈다. 

이탈리아 신문 라 레푸블리카는 정명훈은 베르디 해석의 권위자로 라 스칼라 극장에서 폭넓은 레퍼토리로 두각을 나타냈으며, 밀라노 관객이 가장 사랑하는 예술가 중 한 명이라고 전했다.

Maestro Myung-Whun Chung will succeed Maestro Riccardo Chailly as Music Director. Maestro Chung's appointment will take effect upon the expiry of Maestro Chailly's contract at the end of 2026.

Maestro Myung-Whun Chung has, over the years, developed a particularly close and fruitful relationship with both the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro alla Scala, as well as with the Filarmonica della Scala, which appointed him its Honorary Conductor, the first Maestro ever to hold this position. He is also one of the most beloved artists among the Milanese public, as evidenced by the enthusiastic response to the concerts held on March 17, 19 and 21, and is the conductor who has most contributed to the international prestige of the Teatro alla Scala, excluding its Music Directors. In this, he follows in the footsteps of his mentor, Carlo Maria Giulini, who led the Filarmonica’s first international tours. Not by chance, Maestro Chung was the protagonist of one of La Scala’s most recent international opera tours, conducting Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra at the Bol’šoj Theatre in Moscow in 2016, while a new orchestral tour in Asia will be announced soon.

Maestro Chung, who besides being a conductor is also an accomplished pianist, has been a constant presence in La Scala’s seasons in Milan and on tour since 1989, conducting nine opera productions over 84 performances and 141 concerts (in this regard as well, he holds the record for the highest number of appearances, apart from the official Music Directors). A leading interpreter of Verdi, he has also distinguished himself at La Scala for the breadth of his repertoire, having conducted works by Dmitrij Šostakovič (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, 1992), Richard Strauss (Salome, 1995), Giacomo Puccini (Madama Butterfly, 2007), Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Idomeneo, 2009), Giuseppe Verdi (Simon Boccanegra in 2016 and 2018; Don Carlo, 2017; La traviata, 2019), Carl Maria von Weber (Der Freischütz, 2017) and Ludwig van Beethoven (Fidelio, 2018).

Among the many positions held by Maestro Chung are Principal Guest Conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle (the first ever to hold this position); Honorary Music Director of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in Paris and the KBS (Korean Broadcasting System); his recent appointment as Artistic Director of the new Busan Opera and Concert Hall in South Korea.

In the past, Maestro Chung has been Music Director of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra, Principal Guest Conductor of the Teatro Comunale di Firenze, Principal Conductor of the Orchestra of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome and Music Director of the Opéra de Paris-Bastille. Over the course of his career, he has conducted many of the world’s most renowned orchestras across Europe, Asia and the United States.

Maestro Chung has received numerous awards and honors, including the title of Commandeur de la Légion d’Honneur from the French Government, Commendatore dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia and Grande Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana from the Italian Government and the Abbiati Prize for conducting at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia and with the Filarmonica della Scala. He has also been awarded the keys to the city of Venice and, in 2024, the keys to the city of Florence. He was honored with the Keumkwan, the highest cultural distinction awarded by the Korean Government. In 2008, Myung-Whun Chung became the first conductor ever to be appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF.
