Koyo Kouoh (1967 – 2025)

 

 

아프리카 여성 최초로 베니스 비엔날레 예술감독으로 임명됐던 코요 쿠오(Koyo Kouoh, 58)가 5월 10일 스위스 바젤의 병원에서 암으로 세상을 떠났다. 

 

코요 쿠오가 관장 겸 수석 큐레이터로 일했던 남아프리카공화국 케이프타운의 자이츠 아프리카 현대미술관(Zeitz MOCAA, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa) 은 쿠오의 사망을 발표하며, 사인은 밝히지 않았다. 코요 쿠오는 지난해 12월 2026 베니스 비엔날레 큐레이터로 임명됐으며, 오는 5월 20일 제 61회 베니스 비엔날레의 전시 제목과 주제를 발표할 예정이었다. 

 

1967년 카메룬에서 태어난 코요 쿠오는 13살 때부터 취리히에서 자랐다. 스위스의 어느 대학에서 경영학과 금융학을 전공한 후 프랑스에서 문화 경영학을 공부한 후 사회복지사로 일했다. 프랑스어, 독일어, 영어, 이탈리아어에 능통했던 코요 쿠오는 20대 중반인 1995년 세네갈의 다카르로 이주해 독립 큐레이터로 활동하면서 미술가 레지던시 겸 갤러리 RAW Material Company를 설립했다. 

 

2019년엔 자이츠 아프리카현대미술관의 관장으로 임명됐다. 2014년부터 2022년까지 아트리뷰(ArtReview)의 현대미술계에서 가장 영향력있는 인물 100인에 선정되었다. 지난해 뉴욕 퀸즈미술관의 '트레이시 로즈(Tracey Rose) 회고전'과 월 브뤼셀의 보자르미술관(Cnter for Fine Arts, Bozar)서 개막한 약 120명의 흑인 작가들의 그룹전 "When We See Us: A Century of Black Figuration in Painting"이 호평받았다. 이 전시는 8월 10일까지 계속될 예정이다.

 

쿠오는 최근 암 진단을 받은 것으로 알려졌다. 제 61회 베니스 비엔날레는 내년 5월 9일부터 11월 22일까지 열린다. 베니스 비엔날레 측은 코요 쿠오의 별세 소식을 웹사이트에 올렸다.

La Biennale di Venezia is deeply saddened and dismayed to learn of the sudden and untimely passing of Koyo Kouoh, Curator of the 61st International Art Exhibition, scheduled to open on 9 May 2026.

 

Appointed in December 2024 by the Board of Directors of La Biennale, Koyo Kouoh worked with passion, intellectual rigor and vision on the conception and development of the Biennale Arte 2026. The presentation of the Exhibition’s title and theme was due to take place in Venice on 20 May.

 

Her passing leaves an immense void in the world of contemporary art and in the international community of artists, curators, and scholars who had the privilege of knowing and admiring her extraordinary human and intellectual commitment.

 

La Biennale di Venezia extends its deepest sympathies and affection to her family, her friends, and all those who shared with her a journey of research and critical thought on contemporary art.
