'부에나 비스타 소셜 클럽' '죽어야 사는 여자' 10개 부문 후보

토니상 남우주연상 후보에 오른 다니엘 대 김(옐로우 페이스)/ 토니상 최우수 뮤지컬 등 10개 부문 후보로 지명된 한국산 '어쩌면 해피엔딩'.

 

한국산 창작 뮤지컬 '메이비 해피 엔딩(Maybe Happy Ending)이 2025 토니상(Tony Awards) 최우수뮤지컬을 비롯 10개 부문 후보에 올랐다. 뮤지컬 '부에나 비스타 소셜 클럽(Buena Vista Social Club)'과 '죽어야 사는 여자(Death Becomes Her)'도 최우수 뮤지컬을 비롯 10개 부문에 노미네이트됐다. 

 

박천휴(Hue Park) 작사, 윌 애런슨(Will Aronson) 작곡, 박천휴 각본의 '메이비 해피엔딩'은 최우수 뮤지컬, 각본, 오리지널 작곡, 연출, 남우주연, 오케스트레이션, 무대디자인, 조명디자인, 의상디자인, 사운드디자인상 부문 후보에 지명됐다.   

 

이 뮤지컬은 한국 타이틀 '어쩌면 해피엔딩'으로 2016년 서울 대학로의 Yes24 스테이지(구 DCF 대명문화공장)에서 초연됐다. 헬퍼봇 올리버와 클레어의 관계를 그린 SF 뮤지컬로 2020년엔 아틀란타의 얼라이언스 시어터에서 공연됐다. 지난해 9월 18일부터 프리뷰를 거쳐 벨라스코 시어터(Belasco Theatre, 1,016석)서 프리뷰 후 10월 17일 개막한 후 주간 수입 100만 달러 전후의  흥행 수입을 올리고 있다.   

 

올리버는 서울 시내의 원룸 아파트에서 화초를 돌보며 행복하고, 조용하게 살고 있다. 어느날 이웃의 쓸모 없어진 헬퍼봇(HelperBot) 클레어가 충전기를 빌려달라 요청하면서 로보트간의 어색한 만남은 사랑으로 발전된다.

 

2023년 리바이벌 뮤지컬 '퍼레이드(Parade)'로 토니상을 수상한 마이클 아덴(Michael Arden)이 연출을 맡고, 다렌 크리스(Darren Criss)과 헬렌 J. 셴(Helen J. Shen)이 주연을 맡았다. '메이비 해피엔딩'은 올 드라마데스크상 최우수 뮤지컬상 등 9개 부문에 올라 있다. 

 

한편, 데이빗 헨리 황(David Henry Hwang) 원작 '옐로우 페이스 (Yellow Face)'은 최우수 리바이벌 연극, 다니엘 대 김(Daniel Dae Kim)은 남우주연, 프란시스 주가 남우조연 후보로 지명됐다. 다니엘 대 김은 토니상 역사상 최초로 남우주연상 후보에 오른 남자배우가 됐다. 그는 '굿나잇, 굿럭'의 조지 클루니와 경합하게 된다. 

 

중국계 배우 B. D. 왕(B.D. Wong)은 1988년 데이빗 헨리 황의 'M. 버터플라이(M. Butterfly)'로 토니상 남우조연상을 수상한 바 있다. B.D. 왕은 샌프란시스코에서 홍콩계 이민자 가정에서 태어났다.  

 

1988년 'M. 버터플라이'로 토니상을 거머쥔 희곡작가 데이빗 헨리 황 '엘로 페이스는 1999년 백인 배우 조나단 프라이스가 뮤지컬 '미스 사이공(Miss Sauigon)'에 캐스팅된 것에 반발하며 인종의 문제를 탐구한 코미디. 리 실버만이 연출한 '옐로 페이스'는 지난해 9월 13일 토드하임스 시어터(Todd Haimes Theatre, 구 아메리칸에어라인 시어터, 740석)에서 프리뷰 후 10월 1일부터 11월 24일까지 공연됐다. 2007년 오프브로드웨이 퍼블릭시어터에서 한인배우 이동훈씨 주연(DHH 역)으로 공연된 바 있다. 

 

 

 

올해는 할리우드 스타들이 대거 브로드웨이에 진출했다. 조지 클루니는 자신이 감독, 주연했던 영화 '굿 나잇, 굿 럭(Good Night, Good Luck)'으로 연극 부문 남우주연상 후보에 올랐다. 하지만, '오델로(Otello)'의 덴젤 워싱턴과 제이크 질렌할, '글렌게리 글렌 로스'에 출연한 키런 컬킨은 탈락했다. 

 

브로드웨이 2024-25 시즌엔 총 14편의 신작 뮤지컬, 14편의 신작 연극, 14편의 리아이벌까지 총 42편이 공연됐다. 지난해의 37편, 2022년의 38편에 비해 공연 작품이 증가했다.   제 78회 토니상 시상식은 6월 8일 라디오시티 뮤직홀에서 신시아 에리보(위키드)의 사회로 진행될 예정이다.
