For over 20 years, the Flamenco Festival has brought Spain’s greatest flamenco talents to City Center. See all three events and feel that legacy and artistry in an explosive two-week extravaganza of music and dance. Performances at this year’s festival will highlight the Spanish guitar as the epicenter of flamenco, through the lenses of traditional and avant-garde flamenco.

 

First, the National Ballet of Spain, led by Rubén Olmo, storms the stage with 38 dancers in Invocación. Then, Premio Nacional de Danza winner Olga Pericet kicks off a star-studded weekend with her unique and intimate solo piece, La Leona. Finally, Gala Flamenca showcases dance talents Manuel Liñán, Alfonso Losa, El Yiyo, and Paula Comitre, accompanied by vocalist Sandra Carrasco.

 

Durante más de 20 años, el Flamenco Festival ha traído a los mayores talentos del flamenco de España al City Center. Vea los tres eventos y sienta ese legado y artes en una explosiva extravagancia de dos semanas de música y baile. Las actuaciones en el festival de este año destacarán la guitarra española como el epicentro del flamenco, a través de las perspectivas del flamenco tradicional y vanguardista interpretadas.

 

Primero, el Ballet Nacional de España, dirigido por Rubén Olmo, irrumpe en el escenario con 38 bailarines en "Invocación". Luego, la ganadora del Premio Nacional de Danza, Olga Pericet, da inicio a un fin de semana lleno de estrellas con su singular e íntima pieza en solitario, "La Leona". Finalmente, Gala Flamenca presenta los talentos de baile de Manuel Liñán, Alfonso Losa, El Yiyo y Paula Comitre, acompañados por la cantaora Sandra Carrasco.

3 Things to Know about Flamenco

 

Flamenco refers to a form of song (cante) and dance (baile) that originated in Southern Spain hundreds of years ago. These two elements are deeply intertwined, and flamenco dance is rarely performed without musical accompaniment.

 

Duende flamenco is a state of transcendence in which a flamenco performer—singer, dancer, or musician—fills the stage with their presence. Duende can move audiences to experience an indescribable, almost overwhelming response to a great flamenco artist.

 

The Spanish Guitar, also known as the baroque guitar, is a five-string guitar that is a fundamental emblem of flamenco. It is believed to have been invented in Spain by Vicente Espinel in the 16th century. This year's festival is dedicated to the remarkable life and extraordinary contributions of legendary flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucía. A groundbreaking musician and composer, his profound impact transcends flamenco, and we respectfully honor his lasting legacy.

The internationally acclaimed National Ballet of Spain (Ballet Nacional de España) takes the City Center stage by storm in Invocación, an epic event for 38 dancers. A fusion of Spanish choreography and heritage led by director Rubén Olmo, Invocación celebrates the rich diversity of Spanish dance, including styles from flamenco to escuela bolera. It also includes a tribute to the great dancer and choreographer Mario Maya, one of the creators of the Andalusian Flamenco Theater.

Premio Nacional de Danza winner Olga Pericet commands the stage in her stunning solo La Leona. For one night only, Pericet embodies both meanings of La Leona—the lioness and the flamenco guitar of Antonio De Torres—in a witty, avant-garde deconstruction and celebration of traditional flamenco music and choreography. 

Please note, La Leona includes partial nudity.

A festival within a festival, Gala Flamenca presents four incredible flamenco dancers in one program, accompanied by the talented vocalist Sandra Carrasco. Manuel Liñán returns to City Center after the 2022 roaring success, ¡VIVA! He is joined by celebrated flamenco artist Alfonso Losa. The sizzling El Yiyo (Miguel Fernández Ribas) brings his infectious energy to the event and dazzling soloist Paula Comitre lends her talents to complete this flamenco extravaganza in a program you won’t want to miss.
