1월 20일 부산에서 기자들과 질의응답하던 이재명(59) 더불어민주당 대표를 칼로 습격해 살인미수 혐의로 기소된 김진성(Kim Jin-seong, 1957년생, 66)씨의 실명을 뉴욕타임스가 공개했다. 한국 언론들은 경찰의 신원 미공개에 따라 김모씨로 표기하고 있다. 김씨는 영등포구청에서 근무하다가 2001년 명예퇴직 후 충청남도 아산시 배방읍 북수리에서 부동산 중개업소를 운영해온 것으로 알려졌다.
