12일 오후 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA)에서 60세 백인(Gary Cabana)이 입장을 거부당하자 두 직원을 칼로 여러차례 찌르는 사건이 발생해 대피 소동이 벌어졌다. 용의자는 도주했으며, 두 직원은 벨리뷰 병원에서 치료 중으로 생명에는 지장이 없는 것으로 알려졌다.

 

사건은 이날 오후 4시 15분경 MoMA 정문 옆의 영화관 입구(별도)에서 벌어졌다. 최근 2차례 비행으로 11일 멤버 자격을 박탈당한 60세는 이날 4시 30분 영화 'Bringing Up Baby'(1938-*하워드 혹스 감독, 캐리 그랜트, 캐서린 헵번 주연 코미디)를 보러 갔지만, 입장을 거부당했다. 그러자 그는 리셉션 데스크에 있던 남녀 직원(24세)에게 달겨들어 칼로 목과 등을 수차례 찌르고 달아났다.

MoMA 측은 사건 발생 후 "폐관한다"고 방송했으며, 관람객들은 에스칼레이터가 붐벼 비상구를 통해 빠져나갔다. 이즈음 MoMA 정문에서 입장을 기다리고 있던 사람들은 "총격!"이라는 외침을 듣고 바닥에 엎드리기도 했다.

 

Gothamist에 따르면, 게리 카바나는 미주리주립대학교에서 연극을 전공했으며, 브로드웨이 시어터에서 좌석 안내원(usher)으로 일했다. 맨해튼에서 홀로 살아온 카바나는 특히 코로나 팬데믹 이후 외로움에 짜졌다고 친구들은 전했다. 뉴욕포스트에 따르면, 게리 카바나는 13일 자신의 양극성 장애에 대해 이야기하는 동영상을 게시했으며, 인스태그램 페이지에서 경찰을 조롱했다. 

 

MoMA는 소셜미디어를 통해 3월 13일 뮤지엄 숍과 함께 임시 폐관한다고 발표했다.
