JUNE 13, 2019, NEW YORK – Presented by Asian CineVision, the 42nd Asian American International Film Festival (AAIFF42) has set Justin Chon’s MS. PURPLE as its Centerpiece presentation on Saturday, July 27, 2019. Closing the festival on Saturday, August, 3, 2019 will be Julian Kim and Peter S. Lee’s HAPPY CLEANERS.

MS. PURPLE marks director Justin Chon’s return to the festival, having previously opened AAIFF40 with his debut feature GOOK. Kasie, who’s stuck in Los Angeles’s Koreatown, works as a karaoke hostess getting paid for her companionship by drunken men. When her dad’s hospice nurse quits she reconnects with her estranged brother, Carey, forcing them to enter a period of intense self-reflection as their single father nears death.

Directors Julian Kim and Peter S. Lee’s ode to their immigrant parents, HAPPY CLEANERS tells another intergenerational story. Set in Flushing, Queens, the film follows the day-to-day lives of the Choi Family as they navigate through their respective struggles, cultural clashes, and inner angst, all while trying to keep the family dry cleaning business afloat.

From Los Angeles to New York, Asian American enclaves across the country are rich with stories of survival and collapse, triumphs and failures. As the community finds its voice, these films contribute authentic depictions of the Asian American family, so often defined by the immigration experience and the struggles that pervade each generation. When articulated and portrayed in film, these stories shape what we call Asian American history and culture, and the Asian American International Film Festival continues to be committed in presenting them to its audience.

Gold Passes, which grant priority admission to all screenings, panels, workshops, and special events, including Opening, Centerpiece, and Closing, are currently on sale at goelevent.com/AAIFF/Package/Sale/. The 42nd Asian American International Film Festival will run July 25 – August 3, with full lineup for sale on Wednesday, June 26, 2019.
