Spanning some 500 years, the Joseon dynasty created a rich legacy of culture still felt today. See Korean screens and scrolls, ceramics and ritual wares, furnishings and vibrant costumes in this not-to-be missed exhibition. The richness of court culture, diverse religious rituals, and stories of everyday life underpinned by Confucianism are revealed through these stunning objects.

Ran Hwang, contemporary artist of South Korea, was invited to create a unique installation in conjunction with this special exhibition. It is a privilege to have Ran Hwang’s interpretation of court treasures and city life of the Joseon dynasty. Exploring the theme of the circulation of life and death through the motif of a wedding ceremony, Ran Hwang reinterpreted her bespoke iconography of the plum and the phoenix. She created spectacular installations of flowers and birds accompanied by digital videos of a colossal scale and by numerous peppers on the ceiling. Best known for her works of pins, buttons, and thread, Ran Hwang presented a new vision of images woven with tradition and technology for this special exhibition at The Asian Civilizations Museum, Singapore. 

Traditional Korean music will accompany the installations by Hwang. Musical pieces were composed by Jungseung Kim, artistic director of the Seoul Donhwamun Traditional Theater. 

500년 넘게 이룩해온 조선 왕조시대의 풍부한 문화 유산은 유구한 세월이 흐른 오늘날에도 여전히 느껴지고 있습니다. 이번 전시는 조선 시대 한국문화의 여러 면모를 두루마리 그림들, 도자기, 의례 용품, 가구, 및 화려한 의상들을 통해 볼 수 있는 놓치면 아까운 전시입니다. 전시에 포함된 아름다운 작품 속에서 유교를 토대로 한 조선의 궁정 문화를 비롯 종교 의식과 일반 백성들의 생활상 등을 살펴볼 수 있습니다.

이번 조선왕조 500년사 전시회에서 특별히 설치미술을 제작하도록 한국을 대표하는 현대작가로써 황란 작가가 초빙되었습니다. 조선시대의 궁중 유물과 도성 생활을 작품으로 해석해낸 황란 작가의 작품을 보게 되어 영광입니다. 

삶과 죽음의 순환이라는 주제를 깊이 탐구하여 왔으며 이번 전시에서는 조선 후기 전통 혼례식이란 소재를 사용하여 그녀의 유명한 작품 도상인 매화와 봉황을 새롭게 해석하였습니다. 꽃과 새들로 가득 찬 장대한 설치작품은 거대한 비디오 영상과 천정에 매달린 무수한 고추 오브제 등으로 장관을 이룹니다. 핀과 단추, 실의 작가로 유명한 황란 작가는 싱가포르 아시아문명 박물관에서 전통과 테크놀로지가 아름답게 수놓인 새로운 비전을 제시하였습니다. 

이번 설치작품에 사용되는 한국 전통 음악('상령산' 거문고 독주, 대금 독주, 종묘제례악, 수요남극으로 구성은 서울 돈화문 예술극장의 김정승 예술감독이 편곡 하였습니다.
