국보급 백자 달항아리 소더비 나온다 

8월 한국 전시...9/14-19 뉴욕 전시 후 경매

뉴욕 소더비가 오는 9월 19일 조선시대 백자 달항아리(White-Galzed Moon Jar)를 경매한다. 예상가는 3백만 달러 이상으로 전망된다. 

 

소더비 측은 일본인들이 40여년간 소장했던 이 달항아리가 높이 44cm로 한국의 국보, 세계 박물관과 기관 등지에서 소장한 달항아리와 견출만하다고 밝혔다.

 

백자 달항아리(白磁大壺)는 조선 후기 17세기 말부터 18세기 중반(숙종-영조)에 제작된 대형 항아리로 온화한 흰색, 유려한 곡선과 소박한 형태가 특징이다. 높이가 40cm 이상의 대형으로 둥근 모양과 유백색이 둥근 달을 연상시켜 붙여진 이름이다. 용도는 곡식이나 기름 등을 담는 저장용이나 화병으로 사용되었을 것으로 추정된다. 

 

한국에서 달항아리는 국보 제262호(높이 49cm, 용인대학교 소장), 제309호(44cm, 삼성미술관 리움), 제310호(43.8cm, 국립고궁박물관), 보물 제1437호(국립중앙박물관), 제1438호(김영무), 제1439호(최상순), 제1441호(아모레퍼시픽미술관)로 지정되어 있다.

뉴욕 메트로폴리탄뮤지엄이 소장한 달항아리는 높이가 38.7cm로 달항아리 기준으로는 작은 편이다. 이소영 (현 하버드뮤지엄 큐레이터, 전 메트뮤지엄 큐레이터)씨는 2006년 뉴욕중앙일보에 기고한 칼럼에서 메트의 달항아리에 대해 이렇게 썼다.

 

"메트 뮤지엄의 달항아리는 유약 표면에 부분적으로 감도는 엷은 복숭아 빛이 무엇보다 매력적이다. 

1975년 메트뮤지엄이 미국인 수집가 해리 팩커드(Harry Packard)씨의 유명한 일본 컬렉션을 구입 (일부 기증)할 당시 조선시대 한국 백자 3점도 함께 들어오게 되었는데, 그 중 하나가 이 유물이다. 다른 두 작품 역시 조선 백자의 대표작으로, 포도 그림이 붉은색(동화)으로 그려진 18세기 항아리, 그리고 19세기 사각병이다."

런던 대영박물관(British Museum)의 달항아리 44.5cm 높이로 '영국 스튜디오 도예의 아버지'로 불리우는 버나드 리치(Bernard Leach)가 1935년 서울의 골동품 가게에서 구입한 것으로 1999년 뮤지엄으로 들어갔다. 홍콩에서 태어나 일본 민예운동에 가담했던 버나드 리치는 자만하지 않으면서 아름답고, 완벽하지 않은 조선시대 달항아리에 매료됐다고 한다. 한국을 떠날 때 "행복을 안고 간다"고 말한 것으로 전해진다. 2007년 3월 크리스티 뉴욕 경매에서 달항아리가 127만2천 달러에 낙찰됐다.

이 달항아리는 8월 한국에서 전시된 후 뉴욕 경매 이전 9월 14일부터 19일까지 맨해튼 어퍼이스트사이드 소더비에서 전시될 예정이다. 이번 경매는 9월 소더비의 아시아 주간(Asia Week)에 열리는 것으로 고대 중국미술품(50점, 9/19), 니인제이 램(Nyingjei Lam, 9/20) 소장품과 불교미술 경매에 나오는 미술품중 조선 달항아리가 최고가다.

Poised to lead the week is an unparalleled white-glazed Korean moon jar dating back to the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), from the late 17th to the early 18th centuries. One of the most important Korean ceramics to appear at auction, the moon jar will comprise a single-lot sale – Everything is Transient. An Important White-Glazed Korean Moon Jar – to commence Sotheby’s Asia Week on 19 September, expected to achieve in excess of $3 million. 

 

Exceptionally well-preserved and measuring 44 cm high, this captivating vessel ranks among the largest moon jars known and is comparable to the finest designated National Treasures in Korea or examples housed in museums and institutions worldwide. It is exemplary for its equally wide diameter and resulting voluminous, spherical form, as most related moon jars exhibit a slightly narrower, taller silhouette. Absent of design or decoration, the generous form is enlivened by the rich tonality and lustrous texture of the glaze, further exemplifying its rareness. In the global history of ceramics, it is exceptionally rare to find vessels of such large proportions completely unadorned. 

 

Universally admired for its luminous white porcelain surface, elegant, gravity-defying proportions, and charming idiosyncrasies, the evocatively named moon jar (dalhangari) epitomizes the nuanced, natural beauty acclaimed in Korean ceramics. Completely unique to Korea, moon jars were produced for a short amount of time during the Joseon dynasty for practical purposes, likely for storage of grain or liquid. The jar’s deceptively simple form, plain surface, and striking materiality led to its rediscovery in the 20th century by art historians and artists alike. 

 

From its humble beginnings as a utilitarian vessel, the moon jar has transcended geographic and cultural boundaries to become one of the most iconic and influential works of art in modern times, equally significant in the history of Korean ceramics, the development of modern studio pottery, and global art history.

 

Privately held by Japanese collectors for over four decades, the moon jar will be on public view in Seoul at the end of August for the first time in nearly 40 years since it was displayed at The Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka.
