코네티컷주 하트포드의 워즈워스 아테니움(Wadsworth Atheneum) 뮤지엄은 미국 내에서 지속적으로 운영되고 있는 가장 오래된 뮤지엄으로 컬렉션이 5만여점에 이른다. 뉴욕의 메트로폴리탄뮤지엄은 1870년, 브루클린뮤지엄은 1895년, 뉴욕현대미술관(MoMA)은 1929년 설립됐다.

 

 

하트포드에서 자란 재력가이자 아트 컬렉터 J. P. 모건은 아테니움 부속 건물을 아버지 쥬니어스 스펜서 모건에 헌사하는 모건 메모리얼을 헌사했다. 그리고, 자신의 컬렉션 1300여점을 기증한다. 워즈워스 아테니움은 이로써 5개의 건물이 합병된다. 워즈워스 아테니움은 미국 내 최초로 카라바지오, 프레데릭 처치, 조셉 코넬, 살바도르 달리, 후안 미로의 작품을 구입했으며, 이탈리아 바로크 거장, 초현실주의, 피카소 특별전을 연 최초의 미술관이기도 하다.
