뉴욕현대미술관(Museum of Modern Art)는 오래 전부터 영화를 독립된 예술 장르로 인정하고 수집, 보존, 상영해온 뮤지엄이다. 

 

1935년 세계 미술관 최초로 '필름 라이브러리(Film Library)'라는 영화부서를 설치한 후 영화를 대중오락이나 상업물이 아니라 예술 및 학술적 연구의 반열에 올려놓았다. 현대 3만여편이 넘는 영화 필름을 비롯, 130만장 이상의 영화 스틸, 포스터, 시나리오 등 시각자료를 소장하고 있다. 또한, 무성영화 시대의 희귀 필름부터 세계의 아방가르드 영화, 다큐멘터리, 애니메이션, 그리고 현대에 이르기까지 폭넓게 아우른다. 

 

특히 필름 원본의 물리적 보존과 디지털 복원 작업에도 관여해 왔다. 미술관 지하에 데브라 & 레온 블랙 패밀리 필름센터(The Debra and Leon Black Family Film Center) 등 첨단 상영시설을 갖추고 있다.

 

MoMA 영화부서는 매년 봄 링컨센터 필름소사이어티와 함께 신인감독 발굴 영화제인New Directors, New Film를 열고, 연말엔 한해의 주목할만한 영화들을 상영하는 '더 콘텐더스(The Contenders)' 등을 열고 있다. 

 

2026 컨텐더스(10/28-12/17)엔 베니스영화제 심사위원대상 수상작이자 올 뉴욕영화제(NYFF64)와 토로톤영화제에서 상영된 이창동 감독의 '가능한 사랑(Possible Love)'과 칸영화제에 초청됐던 나홍진 감독의 '호프(Hope)'가 상영된다. '가능한 사랑'은 11월 6일 넷플릭스에 공개된다. 

 

 

The Contenders 2026

Every year there are films that resonate far beyond a theatrical release—if they manage to find their way to a commercial screen at all—or film festival appearance. Their significance can be attributed to a variety of factors, from structure to subject matter to language, but these films are united in their lasting impact on the cinematic art form.

 

For this annual series, the Department of Film combs through major studio releases and the top film festivals in the world, selecting influential, innovative films made in the past 12 months that we believe will stand the test of time. Whether bound for awards glory or destined to become a cult classic, each of these films is a contender for lasting historical significance, and any true cinephile will want to catch them on the big screen.

 

Tickets are available to members at the Explore category and above beginning two weeks before each screening date. Additional tickets will be released to members and the general public one week before each screening date. Please note that space is extremely limited and tickets will be in high demand. Tickets can be reserved beginning at 10:30 a.m. ET on the date of availability.

 

Due to limited availability for the Contenders series, members at the Explore category and above receive only two free tickets per membership.

If a screening is sold out, a standby line will form one hour prior to start time. If you are a ticket holder and arrive after the scheduled start time, we cannot guarantee entry.
