제 79회 칸영화제 경쟁 부문에 연상호 감독의 '호프(Hope)', 미드나잇 상영회에 나홍진 감독의 '군체(Gun-Che)'가 초청됐다. 한국영화가 경쟁 부문에 초청된 것은 2022년 박찬욱 감독의 '헤어질 결심(Decision to Leave)' 이후 4년만이다. 

 

'호프'는 비무장지대 인근의 고립된 항구 마을 호포항 외곽에서 미지의 존재가 목격된 후 그 실체를 수색하다가 마을이 파괴될 위기에 직면하게 된 사람들의 이야기를 다룬 미스테리 스릴러로 황정민, 조인성, 정호연, 알리시아 비칸데르, 마이클 패스벤더, 테일러 러셀 등이 출연한다. 나홍진 감독은 첫 장편 '추격자(The Chaser)'로 2008년 미드나잇 스크리닝, '황해(The Yellow Sea)'는 2010년 주목할만한 시선, '곡성(The Wailing)'은 2016년 비경쟁 부문에 초청된 바 있다. 

 

2026 칸영화제 개막작은 피에르 살바도리 감독의 코미디 '일렉트릭 키스'(La Venus électrique)'다. 이외에도 페드로 알모도바르, 아스가르 파르하디, 고레에다 히로카즈, 크리스티안 문지우, 하마구치 류스케 등 거장들의 신작이 경쟁 부문에 선보인다. 올 심사위원장은 박찬욱 감독이다. 올 칸영화제엔 세계 141개국에서 2천541편의 장편영화가 출품됐다. 이는 10년 전보다 1천편이 더 많은 수치다. 칸영화제는 바브라 스트라이샌드와 피터 잭슨 감독에게 각각 명예 황금종려상을 수여할 예정이다.
