'독립영화의 축제', '신인감독의 등용문' 2026 선댄스 영화제(Sundance Film Festival)에 한국계 두 여성 감독의 데뷔작이 초청됐다. 

1월 22일부터 2월 1일까지 유타주 파크시티에서 열리는 제 44회 선댄스 영화제 미 극영화(U. S. Dramatic Competition) 부문에서 스테파니 안(Stephanie Ahn) 감독의 '베드포드 파크(Bedford Park)'와 입양 한인 감독 리즈 사전트(Liz Sargent) 감독의 '테이크 미 홈(Take Me Home)'이 경쟁을 벌인다.

스테파니 안의 감독 데뷔작 '베드포드 파크'는 어린 시절 학대받은 트라우마에 시달리는 뉴저지의 코리안아메리칸 물리치료사 오드리(최희서 분)가 엄마(원미경 분)의 교통사고 가해자인 일라이(손석구 분)를 만나면서 벌어지는 이야기다. 

 

오드리의 아버지는 알코올 중독, 엄마는 그녀를 결혼시키려 압박하고, 자신은 이민자로서의 정체성 문제에 시달린다. 한인 입양인으로 레슬링 선수였던 엘리는 어린 딸, 마이애미에서 수상한 일을 제안하는 이복형제와의 갈등으로 고민이다. 오드리와 엘리는 어린 시절 트라우마와 한국문화 특유의 '한'을 공유하면서 예상치못한 감정에 휩싸이게 된다. 베드포드 파크는 원래 뉴욕 브롱스의 한 지역이지만, 이 영화는 뉴저지 잉글우드에서 대부분 촬영됐다. 

 

 

 

스테파니 안 감독은 뉴욕대 티쉬예술대에서 영화를 전공한 후 이스라엘 호로비츠 감독, 케빈 클라인, 매기 스미스 주연의 '마이 올드 레이디(My Old Lady, 2014)' 등의 편집자로 일해왔다. '베드포드 파크'는 데뷔작 심사위원 특별상을 수상했다. 

 

2020 선댄스 영화제에선 정이삭(Lee Issac Chung) 감독의 '미나리(Minari)'가 심사위원 대상(Grand Jury Prize)과 관객상(Audience Award)의 2관왕을 차지했다.

리즈 사전트 감독의 '테이크 미 홈'은 인지장애가 있는 30대의 한인 입양인 안나(안나 사전트 분)가 플로리다에서 역시 입양된 여동생 에밀리(앨리 안 분)와 치매에 걸린 아버지(빅터 슬레작 분)를 돌보면서 미 의료 시스템의 부당함과 장애인들이 직면하는 구조적인 어려움을 담았다. 사전트가 시나리오를 쓴 이 영화엔 그의 여동생 안나 사전트가 주연을 맡았다. 

 

'테이크 미 홈'은 2023 선댄스영화제에서 호평을 받았던 동명 제목의 단편을 장편으로 확장한 것이다. 사전트는 노스캐롤라이나예술학교에서 안무를 전공한 후 단편영화 'SLOW DOWN: River To River'로 2020 뉴욕 에미상을 수상했다. 

 

 

  

올 미국 극영화 부문에는 이외에도 레이첼 램버트 감독의 '카루셀(Carousel)', 호세인 케샤바즈와 마리얌 아태이의 '친구의 집은 여기(The Freind's House Is Here)', 조세프 구보타 울레디카의 '하-찬, 엉덩이를 흔들어라!(Ha-Chan, Shanke Your Booty!)', 람지 바슈어의 '핫 워터(Hot Water)', 베스 드 아라우조의 '조세핀(Josephone)', 지젤 보닐라의 '뮤지컬(The Musical)', NB 메이저의 '광란(Run Amok)', 아담 믹스의 '유니온 카운티(Union County)'가 본상에서 경쟁한다. 2026 선댄스영화제는 164개국에서 출품된 16,201편 중에서 선정됐다. 이중 장편이 4,255편이며, 미국 영화가 1,676편, 외국영화가 2,579편이다.   

 

올 선댄스영화제는 갈라 행사에서 지난 9월 89세로 세상을 떠난 설립자 로버트 레드포드를 추모했다. 이와 함께 레드포드가 스키 선수로 출연한 마이클 리치 감독의 '다운힐 레이서(Downhill Racer, 1969)'가 상영된다. 2027 선댄스영화제는 유타주 파크시티에서 콜로라도주 볼더로 이전해 열리게 된다.
