메트오페라 + 사우디음악협회, 문화교류 양해각서(MOU) 체결

사우디 정부, 메트오페라에 8년간 2억달러 제공

5년간 2월 레퍼토리 공연, 알울라 배경 신작 기획

메트로폴리탄오페라가 사우디아라비아와 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다. 뉴욕타임스에 따르면, 메트오페라는 매년 겨울 3주간 사우디아라비아에서 공연할 예정이다. 이를 통해 메트오페라는 약 1억달러 이상의 수익을 올릴 것으로 예상된다. 사우디는 향후 8년간 2억 달러 이상을 메트에 제공하기로 잠정합의한 것으로 알려졌다. 

메트오페라는 코로나19 팬데믹 이후 운영비 충당을 위해 기금의 1/3 이상인 1억2천만 달러를 인출했다. 타임스는 21세기에 대규모 라이브 오페라를 공연하는 것이 가능한지 의문을 제기한다고 지적했다. 메트오페라의 단장 피터 겔브는 타임스와의 인터뷰에서 사우디와의 계약이 최소 2032년까지 재정적 필요의 상당 부문을 충당할 것이며, 더 이상 기금을 긴급자금으로 사용할 필요가 없을 것이라고 말했다. 메트오페라의 연간 예산은 약 3억 3천4백만 달러다. 

이번 계약에 따라 메트오페라는 리야드 외곽에 위치한 약 11에이커, 14억 달러 규모의 복합단지인 로열디리야 오페라하우스(Royal Diriyah Opera House)의 겨울 상주 공연단이 된다. 2028년 개관 예정인 이 오페라하우스에서 5년간 매년 2월 3주간 모차르트의 '마술피리'와 푸치니의 '라 보엠' 등을공연할 예정이다. 영국 작곡가 조너단 도브(Jonathan Dove)가 사우디의 고대도시 알 울라를 배경으로 작곡한 오페라를 무대에 올릴 계획도 있다. 또한, 뉴욕에서 사우디 성악가, 음악가, 작곡가, 연출가, 무대 디자이너, 기술자들에게 교육을 제공할 것으로 알려졌다. 

이번 합의에 참여한 사우디 정부 문화 담당관 폴 파시피코는 "포괄적인 음악교육 시스템 구축을 위한 사우디의 노력을 크게 가속화하고 클래식 음악계의 강국으로 도약하는 데 도움이 될 것"이라고 말했다.

메트오페라는 142년 역사상 가장 심각한 재정난을 겪고 있다. 유료 관객 수는 여전히 팬데믹 이전 수준에 미치지 못하고 있다. 2024-25 시즌엔 팬데믹 이전 수용객석의 75% 점유율에서 72%에 그쳤다. 할인티켓으로 인해 지난 시즌엔 예상 수입의 60%만 확보했다. 티켓 판매 수익은 메트오페라 예산의 일부에 불과하며, 주로 자선 기부금에 의존하고 있다. 메트는 지난 3년간 연평균 1억7천4백만 달러를 조성했다. 

피터 겔브 단장은 재정난 해결을 위해 2023년 파리에서 무함마드 빈 살만 알사우드 왕자를 만났다. 무함마드 왕자는 2017년 레오나르도 다빈치의 회화 '살바토레 문디'를 4억5천30만 달러에 구매한 것으로 알려졌다. 겔브는 그해 여름 리야드에서 관계자들을 만났고, 메트오페라는 그해 가을 사우디국립오케스트라와 미국 데뷔 공연 '사우디 오케스트라의 경이로움(Marvels of Saudi Orchestra)'을 열었다. 

사우디는 무함마드 왕세자의 비전 2030 계획에 따라 서구 단체와 협력으로 문화 콘텐츠를 확장하기 위해 파리오페라, 레코딩아카데미, 스미소니언협회, 퐁퓌도센터 등과 파트너쉽을 구축해왔다. 이 와중에 밀라노의 라스칼라극장(Teatro alla Scala)는 사우디 정부와의 모금 활동에 관련된 스캔달로 300만 유로 이상의 지원금을 사우디아라비아에 반환했다. 일부 인권운동가들이 사우디아라비아와 협력하는 서구단체와 공연자들이 국가 이미지를 예술로 세탁하는(art-washing)에 일조하고 있다고 비난했기 때문이다. 

메트오페라 이사회는 사우디와의 계약을 만장일치로 지지하면서 2006년부터 단장직을 맡아온 피터 겔브의 임기를 2030년까지 연장했다. 겔브 단장은 러시아의 우크라이나 침공 이후 우크라이나를 지원하며 정치적 자유와 인권을 강력히 옹호해왔다. 모스크바 볼쇼이 극장과 관계를 끊고, 푸틴 대통령을 지지했던 수퍼스타 소프라노 안나 네트레브코를 포함한 아티스트들과의 관계도 단절했다.

An MoU Has Been Signed Between the Saudi Music Commission

and the Metropolitan Opera

to Collaborate on World-Class Opera Productions and Cultural Exchange

Diriyah, Saudi Arabia (September 3, 2025)—In an agreement between the Saudi Music Commission, the Royal Diriyah Opera House, and the Metropolitan Opera, the Met will become the resident winter company of Saudi Arabia’s new Royal Diriyah Opera House upon its completion. This initiative is part of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Saudi Music Commission and the Metropolitan Opera, under which the Met company will travel to Riyadh each winter for five years, to perform fully staged operas and concerts over three-week periods.

The Met will also provide training to aspiring Saudi opera singers, composers, directors, designers, theater artisans, and technicians. Aspects of the collaboration will also include the commissioning of a new opera.

At the Saudi Music Commission, we are committed to empowering talents, providing them with the skills, platforms, and global exposure they need to flourish. This collaboration is more than a cultural exchange; it is an opportunity to forge new connections, share our stories through music, and contribute to a vibrant global arts community,” said Paul Pacifico, the CEO of the Saudi Music Commission.

Peter Gelb, General Manager of the Metropolitan Opera, added: “Cultural exchange between countries is essential on a human level, and this plan to collaborate will also provide new avenues of significant support for the Met.”

The memorandum reflects the Music Commission’s commitment to opening new horizons of artistic cooperation with leading global musical institutions, strengthening cultural dialogue through music, and advancing professional development for local talent. It also underscores the Commission’s dedication to enhancing international cultural exchange as a key objective of Saudi Arabia’s National Culture Strategy, aligned with Vision 2030. This step represents an important move toward deepening ties between the Kingdom and leading cultural institutions worldwide.

The Royal Diriyah Opera House was designed by the Norwegian architectural firm Snøhetta, acclaimed for its imaginative and sustainable design ethos, who have infused the design with elements inspired by the traditional architectural style that defines Diriyah.

Located in Diriyah, the Royal Diriyah Opera House is an iconic element of the Diriyah giga project, a multi-billion-dollar development project. The Diriyah project will also include a number of other iconic assets including the 20,000-seat Diriyah Arena, a number of internationally acclaimed museums, over 40 globally renowned hotel and resort brands and upwards of 20,000 residential units.
