달 최초의 예술작품은 제프 쿤스의 미니어처 달 125

클레오파트라, 플라톤, 공자, 다빈치, 엘비스 프레슬리, 앤디 워홀 등 명명 

팝아티스트 제프 쿤스(Jeff Koons)의 125개 달 조각 "The Moon Phases Project"이 2월 15일 플로리다 NASA의 우주센터(Cape Canaveral)에서 달 착륙선 스페이스X 로켓 팔콘9에 실려 발사됐다.

이 작품은 1인치 미니어처 스테인레스 달조각으로 공자, 플라톤, 모차르트, 갈릴레오, 네르페티티, 클레오파트라, 레오나르도 다 빈치, 아르테미사 젠틸레스키, 소저너 트루스, 헬렌 켈러, 빌리 할러데이, 그레이스 켈리, 앤디 워홀, 데이빗 보위 등 역사상 위대한 인물의 이름을 따서 명명됐다. 달 착륙선은 9일만에 달에 도착할 예정이다. 이로써 "The Moon Phases Project"는 달 최초의 예술작품이 된다. 

제프 쿤스는 1955년 펜실베니아주 요크에서 태어났다. 아버지는 가구 판매상 겸 인테리어 장식가, 어머니는 재봉사였다. 어릴 적 방과후엔 가가호호 다니며 포장지와 사탕을 팔면서 용돈을 벌었다. 살바도르 달리를 존경해 화가가 되고자 시카고 아트인스티튜트를 거쳐 메릴랜드 인스티튜트 칼리지오브아트를 다녔다. 

졸업 후인 1977년 뉴욕으로 이주해 MoMA의 회원 담당 직원으로 일했다. 이즈음 달리를 본따서 가느다란 콧수염을 킬렀으며, 빨강 머리로 염색했다. 1980년 뮤추얼펀드와 증권을 거래할 수 있는 자격을 딴 후 월스트릿에서 일했다. 1980년대 소호의 로프트에 30여명의 조수들을 두고 일하면서 앤디 워홀의 공장(Factory)과 비교되기도 했다. 2013년 뉴욕 매거진은 “앤디 워홀 이후의 가장 성공한 아티스트”라는 제목으로 표지에 실었다.

풍선이나 스테인레스 스틸 등을 사용한 동물 이미지로 유명세를 타면서 미술 경매시장에서 고가에 팔려왔다. 지난해 11월 뉴욕 크리스티에서는 ‘튤립(Tulips)’이 3368만 달러에 팔렸다. 1991년 이탈리아의 포르노 스타 치치올리나와 결혼했다가 곧 이혼한 후 1995년 자신의 스튜디오에서 조수로 일하던 아티스트 저스틴 휠러와 결혼했다. 2002년 프랑스 정부로부터 레종도뇌르를 받았으며, 2008년 런던의 로얄아카데미오브아트에서 월스턴상을 받았다.

Hopeful and transcendent, his new project offers viewers a sense of perspective about their place in the vast universe, encouraging profound reflection and contemplation. Centering on the Moon as a symbol of human curiosity and the desire to achieve, Jeff Koons: Moon Phases comprises 125 unique works, each consisting of three components: a sculpture that will be installed on the Moon in perpetuity, a sculpture that will stay on the Earth, and an NFT that corresponds with the sculptures on the Moon and the Earth. On February 15, 2024, 125 sculptures from Jeff Koons: Moon Phases will make a lunar landing on an Intuitive Machines Nova-C Lunar Lander, to be launched on pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center in a fully autonomous mission.

Moon Phases is Koons’s most ambitious work to date. The works in Jeff Koons: Moon Phases each correspond to a distinct phase of the Moon—62 phases of the Moon as seen from the Earth, 62 views of the Moon as seen from different vantage points in space, and one lunar eclipse. The artworks within Moon Phases are each associated with people who have made accomplishments in human history. The list of names is universal, including individuals from various parts of the world, fields, and time periods, with Plato, Nefertiti, Artemisia Gentileschi, Andy Warhol, Gabriel García Márquez, Mahatma Gandhi, Sojourner Truth, Leonardo da Vinci, Ada Lovelace, David Bowie, and Helen Keller among them. These and other names will be individually displayed in front of the Moon Phases, memorializing the figures on the occasion of the Moon mission. In this way, Koons honors some of the greatest achievements of the past to inspire future generations.
