SOFT WATER HARD STONE

부드러운 물방울은 단단한 돌에 구멍이 생길 때까지 떨어진다.

Água mole em pedra dura, tanto bate até que fura 

Soft water on hard stone hits until it bores a hole.

세계의 신인 미술가들을 발굴하는 뉴뮤지엄(The New Museum) 2021 트리엔날레(Triennial)의 주제는 '부드러운 물 단단한 돌(SOFT WATER HARD STONE)'이다. 보도자료에는 주제가 브라질 속담 "Água mole em pedra dura, tanto bate até que fura(부드러운 물방울은 단단한 돌에 구멍이 생길 때까지 떨어진다./Soft water on hard stone hits until it bores a hole)."에서 따왔다고 해설하고 있다. 우리 속담에도 "낙숫물이 댓돌(臺石)을 뚫는다", 중국의 고사성어에도 물방울이 돌을 뚫는다는 뜻의 '수적석천(水適石穿)'이란 말이 있다.

전시 주제에 영감을 준 것은 브라질 출신 가브리엘라 뮤레브(Gabriela Mureb)의 작품 'Machine #4-Stone(2017)'이다. 알루미늄 막대가 모터를 통해 반복적으로 돌을 치는 이 작품은 결국 돌이 구멍을 뚫고, 미세한 가루를 남긴다. 시간이 지남에 따라 구멍이 생긴 돌은 균형을 잃고 넘어질 수도 있다. 이 작품은 결단력, 상호성과 혁명에 대한 은유다.     

제 5회 트리엔날레의 주제는 '부드러운 물 단단한 돌'은 보잘 것 없는 작은 노력이라도 지속되면, 결국 원하는 결과를 얻을 수 있다는 것, 시간은 가장 단단한 물질 조차도 파괴할 수 있음을 강조한다. 이 보잘 것 없는 물방울은 저항의 정신을 은유한다. 2021 트리엔날레는 #BlackLivesMatter와 코로나 팬데믹라는 격변의 시기를 지내면서 큐레이터 마고 노튼(Margot Norton)과 자밀라 제임스(Jamillah James)는 새로운 패러다임을 제시한다.

형식면에서는 기존 미술의 모델, 재료 및 테크닉을 넘어서 구조적 가단성(可鍛性, 금속을 두드려 늘일 수 있는 성질), 구멍이 많고 불안정한 표면, 그리고 기술적 유기적 매체의 유동적이며, 잠재적인 성질에 주목하면서 변형(transformation)을 강조한다. 내용면에서는 자연 세계의 재생 가능성, 인간과 자연 세계와의 불가분의 관계 및 식민주의, 이주 및 폭력이라는 뿌리 깊은 유산과 분투한다.

2021 트리엔날레의 작가 40인은 그동안 간과되었던 역사와 미술 전통을 돌아보며 이와 동시에 기능이 마비됐거나 버려진 잔여물에 새로운 생명을 불어넣어줄 창조적인 잠재력을 기대하게 만든다.

2021 트리엔날레에는 LA에서 활동하는 이강승(Kang Seung Lee)와 캐나다 토론토의 로리 강(Laurie Kang/ Lotus L. Kang) 미국과 캐나다의 한인작가를 비롯해 레바논, 러시아, 튀니지아, 터키, 멕시코, 포르투갈, 프랑스, 네덜란드, 홍콩, 인도, 브라질, 남아프리카공화국, 독일, 오스트리아, 뉴질랜드, 베트남, 영국, 덴마크, 그리스, 중국 등 세계 23개국에서 초대된 신인작가 40인의 최근 작품을 선보이고 있다.

로리 강의 거대한 조각 'Great Shuttle, 2020-21)'은 기존의 임시 칸막이와는 달리 사진필름이 부착된 강철 구조로 대체한다. 이강승, 로즈 살란(Rose Salane)은 평가절하된 역사와 화해를 통해 새로운 형태의 기록 보관소를 만든다.

앤 그린 켈리(Ann Greene Kelly), 블레어 색슨 힐(Blair Saxson Hill). 브론윈 카츠(Bronwyn Katz)는 일상의 물건을 수집하고, 변형해 진부함을 초월한 조각을 제작했다. 사마라 스콧(Samara Scott)은 낡은 티셔츠, 섬유유연제, 담배꽁초, 헤어젤 등을 콜라쥬한다. 안젤리카 로더러(Angelika Loderer), 제스 판(Jes fan), 아이리스 툴리아투(Iris Touliatou)는 이동, 용해, 부패, 변형 및 퇴색되는 작품을 소개한다. 토마스 디아즈 카데뇨(Tómas Díaz Cedeño)는 관개 시스템에 연결된 콘크리트 조각의 추이를 보여준다.

유지(Yu Ji)의 '돌 속의 육체(Flesh in Stone)' 시리즈와 크리스타 클락(Krista Clark)의 'Annotations on Shelter 3/4'(2021), 케이트 쿠퍼(Kate Cooper)의 작품은 건축과 신체의 사이를 조망한다. 아말리 스미스(Amalie Smith)의 입체영화 'Clay Theory, 2019)'는 인간과 지구 사이의 심오한 관계와 인공적인 삶을 탐구한다. 헤라 부이크타시얀(Hera Büyüktaşcıyan)의 'Nothing Further Beyond (2021)', 가엘 초이슨(Gaëlle Choisne)의 '사랑의 신전(Temple of love – Love to love, 2021)', 엠베라 웰만(Ambera Wellmann)의 파노라마 회화도 유연한 경계와 잡종에 대해 질문을 던진다.

작가들의 지역과 개인사가 반영된 작품들도 소개된다. 칼릴 로버트 어빙(Kahlil Robert Irving)은 모자이크 도자기는 쓰레기와 일상 재료처럼 보이지만, 잘 살펴보면 산업화 후 미국 도시와 시간의 잔재가 담겨있는 도자기다. 어빙의 작품은 휘트니뮤지엄에서도 전시 중이다. 니콜라 포팅거(Nickola Pottinger)의 종이펄프 벽 부조 작품, 에린 제인 넬슨(Erin Jane Nelson)의 도자기는 자료사진과 자연에서 수집한 재료를 혼합해 기후위기에 대해 명상하는 반면, 크리스티나 파타이알리(Christina Pataialii)의 대형 추상화는 가족사와 이민사의 렌즈를 통해 계급과 노동의 문제를 환기시킨다.

신시아 다이놀트(Cynthia Daignault)의 'As I Lay Dying, 2021)'의 8점 연작 회화는 미 남부의 '증인 나무'와 남북전쟁의 생존자와 목격자들, 그리고 짐 크로우 시대의 인종차별의 트라우마를 묘사한다. 타냐 러킨 링클레이터(Tanya Lukin Linklater)의 'An amplification through many minds, 2019)'은 미술품의 출처, 뮤지엄 소장품 및 전시 문제를 반영함으로써 원주민들을 활성화한다. 지닌 프레이 응주틀리(Jeneen Frei Njootli)의 '파이팅(Fighting for the title not be pending, 2020)'은 구슬로 작가의 무게를 구성해 부재와 실존, 전 세계 원주민에 대한 지속적인 권리박탈과 폭력을 암시한다.

산드라 무진가(Sandra Mujinga)의 3채널 비디오 작품 'Pervasive Light, 2021)는 흑인이라는 것에 대해 명상하며,  하이그 아이바지안(Haig Aivazian)의 "All Your Stars are but Dust on my Shoes, 2021)'은 2019년 10월 17일 레바논의 반정부 시위 이후 발견된 영상을 조합해 감시와 통제라는 문제를 탐구했다.
