수세기 동안 롱아일랜드의 이스트엔드(East End)는 미술가들이 풍경과 활기찬 예술 공동체에서 영감을 얻는 곳이었다. 뉴욕에서 확립되고 발전한 추상표현주의(Abstract Expressionism)는 롱아일랜드 이스트 엔드에서도 지대한 의미를 지녔다. 1945년 여름 잭슨 폴락(Jackson Pollock)과 리 크래스너(Lee Krasner) 부부가 햄턴 인근 스프링스(Springs)에 거처를 마련하면서 그 구체적인 형태를 갖추기 시작했다. 

 

워터밀의 패리쉬미술관(Parrish Art Museum)에서 9월 26일부터 내년 2월 14일까지 열리는 특별전 '추상표현주의: 이스트엔드, 1940년부터 오늘날까지(Abstract Expressionism: The East End, 1940 to Today)'는 이스트엔드에서 추상표현주의 운동이 어떻게 꽃피웠는지 조명하며, 이 장르에 기여한 다양한 아티스트들의 작품을 소개한다. 패리쉬미술관 소장품 위주로 구성된 이번 전시는 20세기 중반부터 시작, 1940년대부터 1960년대까지 활동한 1세대와 2세대 추상 표현주의 화가들의 작품을 선보인다.

메리 애벗, 제임스 브룩스, 일레인 드 쿠닝, 펄 파인, 헬렌 프랭켄탈러, 거트루드 그린, 리 크래스너, 조프 샌더스, 에스테반 비센테의 작품을 중심으로 이스트엔드에 거주하며 작업했던 시기에 제작된 작품들을 조명한다. 이 시기는 또한 이 지역 간의 교류가 활발해졌던 때이기도 했다. 폴락과 크래스너는 1948년 여름 윌렘 드 쿠닝과 일레인 드 쿠닝 부부를 스프링스에 있는 자신들의 집에 초대했고, 제임스 브룩스와 샬로트  파크 부부가 뉴욕에서 사우스포크로 이주하도록 적극적으로 권유하여 1949년 이주하게 된다.

이 전시는 또한 추상표현주의 운동이 이스트엔드에 미친 지속적인 영향력을 강조한다. 윌렘 드 쿠닝, 존 오퍼, 베티 파슨스, 조애나 푸세트-다트, 시드 솔로몬의 작품들은 추상표현주의의 부상 이후 시기를 조명하며, 1970년대와 80년대에 걸쳐 변화하는 스타일을 보여준다. 마리나 아담스, 메리 하일만, 클로드 로렌스, 수잔 맥클렐런드, 팻 스티어, 스탠리 휘트니, 프랭크 윔벌리 등의 작품들은 1990년대부터 현재까지 이스트엔드 출신 작가들이 어떻게 제스처 회화를 지속적으로 추구하고 확장해 왔는지를 조망할 수 있다.  

 

10월 4일 메트로폴리탄뮤지엄에서 시작된 폴락과 크래스너의 2인전 'Krasner and Pollock: Past Continuous'와 스프링스의 폴락-크래스너 하우스(Pollock Krasner House) 방문도 추천한다.

For centuries, Long Island’s East End has been a hub of artistic innovation and cultural exchange, where artists have found inspiration in the region’s landscape and thriving arts community. Abstract Expressionism, while a movement established and developed in New York, had immeasurable significance on the East End of Long Island—taking shape in the summer of 1945 with Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner establishing their home base in Springs, NY. Abstract Expressionism: The East End, 1940 to Today examines how the Abstract Expressionist movement flourished on the East End, highlighting the many voices who contributed to the genre.

Drawn primarily from the Museum’s permanent collection, The East End, 1940 to Today begins in the mid-twentieth century, presenting the work of both the first- and second-generation Abstract Expressionists of the 1940s–60s. Featuring works by Mary Abbott, James Brooks, Elaine de Kooning, Perle Fine, Helen Frankenthaler, Gertrude Greene, Lee Krasner, Joop Sanders, and Esteban Vicente, the presentation focuses on paintings made during the years in which the artists were living and working on the East End. This period also marks the growing relationships of the region, which saw Pollock and Krasner recommend Willem and Elaine de Kooning to stay with them at their house in Springs in the summer of 1948 and similarly, advocate for James Brooks and Charlotte Park to make the move from New York to the South Fork, which came to fruition in 1949.

The exhibition also spotlights the enduring influence of the Abstract Expressionist moment on the East End. Works by Willem de Kooning, John Opper, Betty Parsons, Joanna Pousette-Dart, and Syd Solomon highlight the moment after the rise of Abstract Expressionism, demonstrating a shifting style during the 1970s and 1980s. More recent works reveal how East End artists have continued to pursue and expand gestural painting from the 1990s to the present, including paintings by Marina Adams, Mary Heilmann, Claude Lawrence, Suzanne McClelland, Pat Steir, Stanley Whitney, and Frank Wimberley among others.

 

Abstract Expressionism: The East End, 1940 to Today is part of the Museum’s USA250: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness, a year-long program organized in response to the United States’ semiquincentennial in 2026. The USA250 exhibition series will reflect on the nation’s history and founding values, examine our present moment, and imagine new ways of moving forward, while recognizing the contributions of regional artists to the broader landscape of American art and culture. Responding to language in the Declaration of Independence that states “liberty” as one of the inalienable rights, Abstract Expressionism: The East End, 1940 to Today recognizes the contributions of regional artists to the broader landscape of American art and culture while pursuing their own freedom of expression.
