세계 미술계에서 한인들의 영향력이 부상하고 있다. 영국의 미술전문지 아트리뷰(ArtReview.com)가 선정하는 '2025 현대미술계에서 가장 영향력있는 사람 100인(Power 100: Most influential people in the contemporary artworld)에 한인 아티스트 크리스틴 선 김(34위), 양혜규(38위), 김아영(77위), 홍콩 M+ 미술관의 정도련(30위) 큐레이터, 국제갤러리 이현숙(98위) 대표가 올랐다.

2025 '파워 100' 1위엔 가나 출신 미술가 이브라힘 마하마(Ibrahim Mahama)가 선정됐다. 1987년 가나 타말레에서 태어난 마하마는 세계 무역, 상품화, 노동, 경제적 불평등, 이주 그리고 아프리카 식민주의의 정치사회적 유산을 탐구하는 설치작가다. 아트리뷰는 마하마가 비엔나미술관(Kunsthalle Wien)에서 열린 개인전(Ibrahim Mahama: Zilijifa, 9.7.–2.11.2025)에서 자본주의와 낭비, 식민주의와 신식민주의가 얽힌 작품들을 통해 미술이 무엇을 하며, 누구를 위한 것인지에 대한 질문을 끊임없이 제기하고 있다고 평했다.

2위는 카타르미술관의 설립자인 셰이크 알 마야사(Sheikha Al-Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani) 공주. I.M 페이 설계 이슬람미술관(2008), 장 프랑소아 보댕 설계 아랍현대미술관(2010), 장 누벨 설계 카타르국립박물관(NMoQ·National Museum of Qatar, 2019)을 주도했으며, 마크 로스코(화이트 센터), 세잔(카드놀이하는 사람들), 데미안 허스트(봄의 자장가) 등 경매 최고가로 미술품을 구매해온 인물이다.

Curator - Director and chief curator of Hong Kong’s M+ museum

정도련(Doryun Chong)씨는 MoMA의 큐레이터를 지낸 후 2021년 개관한 홍콩의 M+ 뮤지엄에 합류해 미술감독이자 수석 큐레이터를 맡고 있다. 그는 M+ 관장 수하냐 라펠(Suhanya Raffel)과 공동으로 30위에 올랐다. 이들은 20건 이상 국제협력을 체결했으며, MoMA와 대여, 전시 교류 등을 진행하고 있다. 올 3월 파리 피카소미술관과 공동으로 '아시아를 위한 피카소(Picasso for Asia)'를 열었다.

정도련 큐레이터는 도쿄 국립미술관과 협력, '실재의 프리즘: 일본에서의 예술 만들기 1989-2010(Prism of the Real: Making Art in Japan 1989–2010)'를 기획했으며, 2024 베니스 비엔날레를 위해 M+에서 의뢰했던 빈 어항 설치작 '부속의 안뜰(Courtyard of Attachments)'을 재연해 젊은 관람객들을 끌었으며, 건축가 I.M. 페이(I.M. Pei)의 전시는 상하이와 도하를 순회했다.

Foregrounding sound and ASL in the artworld

34위에 랭크된 청각장애 아티스트 크리스틴 선 김(Christin Sun Kim)은 올 휘트니뮤지엄에서 '하루종일, 밤새도록 Christine Sun Kim: All Day All Night'전을 열었다. 아트리뷰는 사운드와 미국수화(American Sign Language ASL)를 탐구하는 크리스틴 선 김은 2013년 뉴욕의 칼더재단에서 '페이스 오페라 2(Face Opera II)', 위니펙의 'Send + Receive' 사운드아트 페스티벌에서 퍼포먼스를 했다. 그는 미국, 영국, 캐나다, 한국, 독일 등지에서 소리현상과 언어를 탐구해왔다고 설명했다. 크리스틴 선 김은 일본 치바공대(千葉工業大学) 헨카쿠센터(変革センタ)의 제 1회 변혁상(変革賞, Radical Transformation Award) 수상자이기도 하다.

Globetrotting artist and KW director

서울과 베를린을 기반으로 활동하고 있는 양혜규 작가는 런던 헤이워드갤러리에서 유목민적인 심성을 담은 대규모 회고전 'Leap Year(윤년)'을 시작, 로테르담 쿤스트할, 취리히의 미그로스현대미술관에서 순회 전시했다. 이어 올초엔 달라스의 내셔조각센터, 멕시코시티 쿠리만주토에서 전시를 열었다. 그는 올 9월부터 베를린 비엔날레를 담당하는KW 연구소(Kunst-Werke Institute)의 디렉터를 맡고 있다.

#77 김아영 Ayoung Kim, Artist

Tackling the impact of technology on society

올 2월 LG구겐하임상(상금 10만 달러)을 수상한 김아영 작가는 소감에서 "난 기술 결정론자도 아니고 기술 비관론자도 아니지만, 항상 기술을 통해 우리 사회에 미치는 영향에 대해 이야기하고 싶었다"고 밝혔다.그는 AI, CGI, 게임 기술, 실사 촬영을 활용하여 제작된 '딜리버리 댄서 3부작'(2022–25)과 같은 멀티미디어 설치작을 통해 이를 실천한다. 올해 베를린 함부르거 반호프, 뉴욕 MoMA PS1, 홍콩 M+(시드니 파워하우스미술관으로순회)에서 개인전을 열었다.

국제갤러리의 창립자 이현숙씨는 아트리뷰 파워100에 11년 연속 선정되어온 유일한 한국인이다. 그는 43년간 서울과 부산에서 외국 유명작가들은 한국에 소개해왔으며, 단색화를 세계에 알리는데 중요한 역할을 했다. 올해도 빌 비올라, 루이스 부르주아, 그리고 갈라 포라스-김의 전시회를 열었다. 이제 세계의 아트딜러들과 컬렉터들이 서울로 몰려오면서 해외 작가들보다 국내 미술가들의 홍보에 집중하고 있다. 2025년 라인업엔 정연두, 안규철 등 젊은 작가들이 있다.

#29 K-Art: The Revival of the Korean Monochrome Painting

In the 2010s, the global art community experienced a renaissance in Korean monochrome abstraction known as 'Dansaekhwa.' Monochromatic painters, who emerged during Korea's era of dictatorship in the 1970s, now find themselves in their prime during the twilight of their careers. I explored the history of Dansaekhwa and the masters such as the late Yun Hyong-keun, late Chung Chang-sup, late Park Seo-Bo and Chung Sang-Hwa, Ha Chong Hyun. Special exhibitions of Korean art are continuing at major art museums in the United States such as the Metropolitan Museum, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Philadelphia Museum. Furthermore, Seoul has now emerged as a global art mecca.
